In one of the movie’s most memorable scenes, Gore travels to Georgetown, Tex., which is, per the city’s mayor, a red city in the reddest county in the red state of Texas. The reason for the visit is that Georgetown is heavily investing in renewable energy from the wind and sun, and once it goes 100 percent renewable, it will be the largest city in the country to do so.
It just made economic sense, the mayor tells Gore.
Here's the deal, unless Michael Moore or Al Gore get elected as prime minister of the world the human race's choices of energy sources will be driven by the economics of technology, not by what people in Washington or Paris believe. The solutions lie in self interest.
Well, the idiot mayor of Georgetown, TX, gambled other people's money and he lost:
Epic fail of renewables causes citizens of Texas town to have $1200 higher power bills
Political leaders in a college town in central Texas won wide praise from former Vice President Al Gore and the larger Green Movement when they decided to go “100 percent renewable” seven years ago. Now, however, they are on the defensive over electricity costs that have their residents paying more than $1,000 per household in higher electricity charges over the last four years.
That’s right – $1,219 per household in higher electricity costs for the 71,000 residents of Georgetown, Texas, all thanks to the decision of its Republican mayor, Dale Ross, to launch a bold plan to shift the city’s municipal utility to 100 percent renewable power in 2012.
