Tax Credit Question

Thu Jun 18, 2020 1:12 pm

Having bought my LEAF this month, I have researched information on the tax credit. All websites I have found claim they will provide everything you need to know. I have also read the IRS form and instructions.

I cannot find the answer to: how does the IRS know the LEAF I bought was before 200,000 were sold? My accountant said I should get a statement from the dealer. The dealer/sales person was clueless about any such statement.

I hope the IRS is told by Nissan all the VINs sold and the dates. So when I provide that on my 8936 form, the IRS will check it with the Nissan list, and I'll get my credit. But I would like confirmation.

Anyone know? Thank you!

I made the title a little more specific. I wouldn't worry about losing the credit because the IRS didn't know that you'd bought the car before the credit expired. The sales receipt and the VIN itself should be enough.

Nissan still hasn't hit 200K. https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/taxevb.shtml has the dates.

It doesn't get cut in half upon reaching 200K either. There's a phaseout period after that. Click on Phaseout near the bottom of https://web.archive.org/web/20160122135 ... xevb.shtml. The image on the current copy is busted.

The only two that have gone thru tax credit reduction are Tesla and GM. Both are now down to $0 on this.

https://insideevs.com/features/337511/n ... ax-credit/ was from near the end of 2018. You can get an idea of how many Leafs Nissan sells in the US via the below. Nissan Motor Co. has no other EVs/PHEVs (not sure if Mitsubishi Motors numbers would be added though...)
