Leaf 2013 Error Codes

Mon Jul 13, 2020 8:47 pm

Hopefully you guys can help me, because the dealer wasn’t able to. When I try to start my 2013 Nissan Leaf I usually get an ‘i-key system fault’ error followed by “When parked apply parking brake”. After receiving the message, I can put my car into drive, but the dashboard does not light up and the power steering does not work. I have to restart it 20 - 50 times before the error message goes away and I am able to drive. I have replaced the key’s battery and it locks and unlocks the car fine. I have also replaced the 12V car battery as other threads suggested, but that didn’t help. The car dealership replaced the Intelligent Power Distribution Module (IPDM) but the error persisted. Any suggestions? I am getting the following error codes:

All of those errors are CAN Bus communication errors or directly related to communication errors. To clear all of the error codes will probably require clearing codes with Leaf Spy (or Nissan's Consult 3+ system) using the following procedure:
1. Read and clear codes with Leaf Spy.
2. Disconnect 12V battery for a few minutes.
3. Reconnect 12V battery.
4. Read and clear codes with Leaf Spy.
5. Read error codes with Leaf Spy. If any error codes remain, then repeat steps 1 through 5. You may need to repeat this process several times to get all of the errors cleared so that the various control modules can communicate with each other over the CAN Bus.

It is possible that one of the modules is failing and causing the communication errors (which then lock up other modules on the CAN Bus), but the most likely cause is low 12V battery voltage.

Your new 12V battery may not have had a full charge when bought. The recommendation is to put it on an external charger.
