Wishful Thinking?

Mon Jun 13, 2011 9:01 am

Hello, been lurking around for a while and wanted to introduce myself. The beginning of my journey was when the Leaf drive electric tour came to Houston this past January. Got a chance to learn about the car and drive it, unfortunately was unable to get on the reservation list then.

Then I heard the news they were opening up reservations again May 1, and was told by a Leaf specialist to wait for an e-mail. It finally comes on the 10th, and I place my reservation. Shortly thereafter, I place the order for the car. In the meantime, EvGo comes out and makes an assessment for the L2 charger. The rep was super nice, he let me go on a long drive in his Leaf!

So a couple days ago Nissan sends me an update saying my Leaf should be delivered by this September. So my question is, is this a realistic/optimistic estimate for Nissan or am I in for one of those stories of multiple delays I've read here?

Thanks everyone for a great forum!

Yes to both.

But, seriously, hard to say. I would hope you have a better shot at getting your car in the predicted time than some of us first-rounders, as Nissan has--we hope--learned some lessons, and--again, we hope (even moreso)--there aren't any more natural disasters about to befall Japan.

That said, I wouldn't bet the farm on getting the car right on time.

Still hoping to get my car this week!

Thanks lonndoggie. Congratulations on the upcoming delivery! If my wait is really only four to five months, I'm super happy. However, my sentiment is if somebody ordered a Leaf before me, they should get it first. Unfortunately, I've read my share of disappointing stories here.

I'm an Optimist, and self-indentified Leaf Fanboy. Having said that, unless another earthquake were to occur, I would have to think that two things are happening now:

1) Nissan is getting a bit more pessimistic with expected delivery dates...better to have a car come earlier rather than later when it comes to customer happiness.
2) Nissan is getting a better grip on post-earthquake supply-chain problems and consequently their expected delivery dates will account for manufacturing problems, a/c software issues, "pollen" issues, etc. I can't imagine that they aren't getting better at predicting deliveries rather than worse.

Just my $.02 from the cheap seats. As always, YMMV. ;)

Seems as though it's truly attainable under the right conditions.

I'm another of those May orders and hope that the delivery time now is near accurate. Not that I particularly care to be a "line jumper," so I hope everyone that ordered before gets their car soon. In any case, my dash recently changed from pending to August. We'll just have to wait and see if the same delay game goes for current orders as it did for the first rounders...

To the OP, let me get this straight: You reserved in the second wave that opened up in May, was able to place an order already (in May or June), and now have a September delivery estimate in your Nissan dashboard? WOW!!!

I don't understand how this adds up because there are 5000 people still waiting for their orders (from the first wave of reservation since last year that was closed off when 20,000 reservations were reached), and Nissan said they hope to have all these 5000 people have their cars by the end of summer.

And they also said 80% of the original 22,500 people are still in the system (18,000 people). So if you subtract the 5000 who will get their cars by end of summer from the 18,000 in the system, it means that there are still 13,000 people left in the system at the end of summer whom Nissan will still have to fulfill by allowing them to order and take delivery.

So how can the second wave of reserved people can order already and are expecting cars in September? It doesn't make any sense...

Also, my brother tried to reserve recently and was told that he's not even allowed to reserve because right now the reservation is only opened up to people who registered before April. I'm confused because I don't even know the difference between registered people and reserved people. Why did Nissan open up the second wave of reservation in May but is now telling people like my brother that they can't even reserve yet?

Nissan doesn't have enough dissatisfied people left, so they pulled out their old playbook? ;)

When I talked with Brendan Jones, VP of Sales and Marketing, he said the realistic delivery for May orders (2nd wave) would probably be late September. So that means most everyone in the first ordering wave should have their LEAFs no later than the end of summer which is Sept.22.

A large number of those 13,000 are in states where the ordering won't start until fall. That is the reason why people in launch states who order now can get the car in 4 to 6 months.
