Ecotality is the company in charge of EV Project.

Ecotality Inc., which makes battery chargers for electric vehicles, moved its head office to San Francisco’s Embarcadero Center.
...
“The Bay Area is a nexus for the electric vehicle industry,” the company said in explaining its move.
...
Its main product is a fast charger for electric vehicle batteries, though it also works on specialty solar products, batteries and fuel cells. Its charging technology is licensed from the California Institute of Technology.
...
Jonathan Read, who used to run the Shakey’s International pizza business, has been Ecotality’s CEO since 2006 and Barry Baer, a retired U.S. Army colonel, is chief financial officer. Donald Karner is boss of the Electric Transportation Engineering unit.

ps : There was some talk the project was in jeopardy when cities on the west coast started passing resolutions banning any contracts for AZ based companies following Arizona's controversial immigration law. So much so, Ecotality actually issued a statement saying the projects were not in jeopardy as the contracts had already been signed.

I don't know whether this move has anything to do with that problem, though.

edit : Here, the view from the loser city.

The decision is based primarily on business reasons, she said. But when asked if politics played a role, she responded, "How could it not." Everyone, including ECOtality has taken note of what's going on in Arizona, she said.

Perhaps they may decide to put something in their home city- LOL. No free chargers in SF but in AZ, the irony!

From the article it looks like only exec are "moving". More likely this is just an address move ... like they "move" the HQ of a major multinational to some island for tax purposes.

To the EV center of the nation that has no charging program in place, and lost other EV related bids and deal. Kind of sad when the Plug in America HQ is here as well!

May be that's exactly the synergy that's needed (thinking positively here).

What exactly do you think the Arizona law does? And why is it illegal?

Gary is saying the opposite - I'm going to move politics related posts to a different thread.

I meant for the EV blunders. But in the end he is to blame:)

I signed up for the EV project but have not heard anything at all from them. I'm in the SF south bay area. Should I keep hoping? Should I have heard a peep by now?

You mean you got an invitation to sign up? It was never even offered to me (20 miles further south than you are).

Did you go to EV Project website and signup ?

Unless they add SF to the list of cities (like they added LA & DC recently) - you won't hear from them. People in the correct zip codes got a separate set of questions when reserving Leaf ... they are the ones currently in the run to get a free charger.

I didn't get an invite, just went to their website and signed up directly. How can they leave out Silicon Valley?

It is my understanding that there cities in the program must commit quite a bit so perhaps the bay area said no. It's a bit of a Joke that the bay area is not leading this.

It's as if they were just introducing the first gasoline cars and for some reason Texas wasn't interested.

The way it all worked out was that ecotality applied for the grant along with Nissan and a bunch of cities. We don't know whether they talked to SF and they didn't show interest or they didn't even speak with them. Ofcourse there is the utility angle as well.
