Japan website list PTC option (pack temp control) ? 5kw

Mon Dec 20, 2010 4:28 am

Part of cold weather pack. Seat heaters and such
what is interesting is it is listed as 5kw
http://ev.nissan.co.jp/LEAF/OPTION/

5kw is beyond the 16a 240 circuit and above the 3.3kw charger circuit so..........

Possible it uses a combo of the Japanese charger cords power and pack power,

or, in Japan if you have cold pack you must have upgraded EVSE

Now in the USA the aero evse would supply 5kw to the PTC and some additional juice the the pack for charging

no way the PTC would work on the trickle cord unless the PTC is capable of using pack power

Heating the cells but reducing charge.

ideas?

PTC = Positive Temperature Coefficient.

It's the cabin heater, located under the hood, roughly under the 12v battery.
Maybe the 5KW one is an optional larger upgrade?

One bonus from the lag in car shipments - maybe I'll be able to add the seat heaters to my order???

5 kw of heat seems large to me. A room can be heated with 1500w heater.

Maybe it is 1000w that runs 5 hours?

Probably Cabin Heater

Tue Dec 21, 2010 2:00 pm

I'm still working thru the service manual sections, but so far have only found one reference to PTC - and it's the positive temperature coefficient cabin heater element. The 5kW PTC cabin heater is computer controlled and powered directly from the high-voltage pack wiring.

That's so it can heat the water quickly, not the most efficient system but easy to implement. One of the reasons the LEaf has a higher weight, many fluids, pumps, cores, valves, etc.

Electric heaters are 100% efficient. :)

Running it from HV makes a lot of sense, since you don't want to include a 5kW DC/DC converter. Bringing HV into or near the passenger compartment is probably not a good idea. Best that it stay on the far end of a fluid loop, so you can still recirc cabin air.
