Repurpose charger and BMS in another car?

Sun Aug 11, 2019 4:10 pm

I'm attempting to put a Leaf drivetrain in a Rover Mini, and I'm stuck getting the "car" started on a bench. Specifically, I can't get passed the "When parked apply parking brake" message, and I've just about given up.

Plan C is to purchase aftermarket charges and BMS, but it would be nice if I could use the Leaf stuff to save a few bucks. It seems like the Leaf CAN BUS system has been pretty well decoded, but I'm wondering if there are any plug-and-play products to get them working without having to delve into an Arduino setup myself?

What does it currently take to repurpose the Leaf chargers (fast and slow) and BMS system (using the same Leaf battery pack and configuration)?

I'm surprised there isn't a plug-and-play product on the market yet, what with the low cost of used Leafs and budding EV conversion industry...

I'm not quite to engineer my own Arduino solution.

With better and cheaper EV offerings from manufacturers, I would think the conversion/DIY market would be dwindling, not growing.

That discounts the entire phenomena of classic cars...They're worse in most ways, yet they command way more value than their contemporary counterparts for some reason...Probably because they look good and are usually easier to modify and maintain.

Electric conversions are on a quick rise due in large part to the plummeting cost of batteries. You can now have an electric classic with V8 torque and none of the smog and maintenance hassles, and these days you can get 100mi range for about 300-400lb of batteries and $5-10k for all parts.

Salvaged OEM parts are waaay cheaper than their aftermarket counterparts, but they're all locked up in proprietary CAN protocols and controllers...

I know that people are doing what you're talking about with Tesla batteries and motors...which makes sense if you're talking about a heavy car and want V8 performance.

Not much room in a British roadster for a Tesla motor, and the Leaf puts down 2-5x the stock torque anyhow...You can also pick up a wrecked-but-driving Leaf for $5-6k. Teslas are still $10-15k for batteries alone..and the motors are wiiide...

I'm not saying Teslas aren't a great path for a conversion, but they're very expensive overkill for what most people want in an electric city car. The Leaf fits that role well, and they're making a lot of them at the moment...

Dunno why this didn't turn up in my searches, but it's a ton of info on the BMS/LBC:

"Anything less than the original 96 cells will require rewiring of the BMS board and some care to not burn out the ICs."

Here is an example of my work of converting WV in the course of work, made short entries in YouTube, used blocks from LEAF 2011 ZEO
