High Voltage Fuse/Service disconnect Gen1 vs Gen2

Fri Oct 23, 2020 1:36 am

Hi,

Have seen on the Gen1 (car's pre 2013) that the battery has a service disconnect plug to pull on top of the battery.
on the Gen2 is a service disconnect plug on top of the battery also.

But the Gen1 service disconnect plug also has a fuse in it.
Where the Gen 2 looks like just a large blade connector and smaller plug housing with no fuse in it.

So does the Gen 2 have a High Voltage fuse else where on the car ?
Or is this smaller service disconnect also a fuse not just a disconnect ?

On 2013+ , the fuse is inside the battery, on the underside where the Service Disconnect Switch is.

I assume that this is to protect the fuse from abuse and arcing, as all that needs to be removed is the shutoff jumper.

You would not be pulling the fuse while its running/on so should not arc
Would disconnect the 12v battery first and that would ensure that the HV relays should be off and no chance of HV current flow

The annoy part if inside the battery is that you have to pull battery from car and split battery open then to change a fuse
So guess they decided that not blowing fuses and was not an concern

Yup, that's the procedure, but people don't always follow rules, and there are also emergency situations where the car might not get turned off first. Like the front of the car being underwater.

Found this post for a 2013 battery being opened
https://www.summet.com/blog/2015/04/17/ ... e-modules/

Does confirms the fuse is under the service disconnect inside the battery (500 volt DC fuse rated at 225 amps)

2011 and 2012 have fuse in the service disconnect
The leaf service fuse is 450VDC rated at 225Ampc

They have this service fuse inside them

That is inside this service disconnect plug.

How did that happen--don't drop that in here and leave us in suspense...
