There is still hope... Minutes ago wall post in Nissan Leaf Facebook group:

Those Reservationists who were eligible to fill out a survey for a free charger during the Nissan LEAF sign up process as part of the US Government sponsored "EV Project" should be receiving a message today from their partner, ECOtality, via a Nissan email. This communication will detail the results of their evaluation of your eligibility for the unit. If you were offered and have taken the survey, but have not received this email by tomorrow, please call 1-866 NO GAS EV (664-2738) or chat online on the LEAF website.

Anyone posting with approved/needs-further-evaluation info - what are the basic details of your main service panel (Panel rating, number of open slots)
I am on the needs-further-evaluation list - have a 100A service panel and no open slots.
I don't think it is about the panel. I think it has to do with some of the other questions. Or, maybe, it is due to glitches in the original on-line form entry. I encountered some problems, so it may have submitted "incomplete".

I have a separate dedicated panel with EV-TOU meter running to hardwired junction box in the garage where my old charger was. That certainly isn't what made my situation questionable.

But I said I don't have a smartphone, since I want to know what one will work best with their system before I invest in that. It could be one of those simple answers that is holding up the works.

Got today's email 7-22 about free charging dock. Says same thing that my account on nissan site said.....we need more information to determine your eligibility and someone will be in touch with you in the next few weeks....

No new information in the email.

Got the 'ECOtality has some additional questions' email today too.

Considerations that I think all play a role in this:
a) I live in a old house (1929) but I have a newer 200 AMP panel. Extra slots are easy for the panel although I have to tinker a bit because I have set up the box for convenience and not for load. I have the garage separate from my shop separate from my media room.. you get it. but I don't pull anything close to 20 amps on those so some consolidation will make for a quick fix. (I answered the survey to let them know I had room for the 220v circuit).
2) I have a detached garage (I need to run a 220 line to it from the panel)
3) All the commute questions - remember they are looking for users of the car that will use it frequently and potentially charge at work as well.
4) your location also plays a role. They want drivers in different locations throughout the area.

Hopefully, the issue with mine is just the detached garage and needing to get a 220 line out there from the box (something I plan to do myself).

It is possible that they need to assess for anyone where the install is not a "standard install".

In my case the house is new, panel is in the garage. So, it is a std install and won't cost more than 2200. If it may cost more, they will assess, give an estimate. The owner would pay the difference between 2,200 and the full installed cost.

I got the approval email, as well.

18 year old house
panel on outside garage wall
200 amp service
2 free breakers, consecutive
Smartphone
Wi-Fi

ECOtality is unable to approve your participation in the U.S. government's EV Project for your home charging unit and installation.

car will be a low mileage daily commuter...a dream set up for ECOtality...
The low mileage daily commuter is not what they are looking for they are looking for med to long drives daily to see how and where we will get the car charged ie home, work, on the road.

Anyone know if this is the EVSE that the EV Project will be using?
EXTREMELY unlikely. That unit was "created" 10+ years ago for generation 2 EVs (Gen1=a century ago).

No that is not the unit. They are unveiling their new unit next week at the PlugIn conference in San Jose. Got the email today talking about it: http://bit.ly/arEJ0t

I too have received the approval email. I live in the San Diego area and responded to the survey as making primarily short trips. As some commenters have already mentioned, I believe that the EV Project is selecting a variety of driving styles in each of the selected markets. Last month, the EV Project added 1,000 more LEAFs to the original agreement, and also added 2,600 Chevy Volts, along with adding Los Angeles and Washington, DC.

For more info, and to learn more about the LEAF and if it's right for you, please check out my website:http://livingleaf.info

Could someone please post an image of the email from ECOtality for your free charger?

I didn't get any reply. I am so sad :-( I checked my inbox 7/22 emails and nothing came up... so sad...

I received an email from my LEAF specialist yesterday. He went to a LEAF training on the 22nd. This is one thing he learned about people who have been accepted into the EV Project:

They did make note that if you qualified for the ETEC dock (notification sent 7/22) your Nissan LEAF SV(lower trim level) would be upgraded with a free level 3 DC FAST CHARGE PORT.

Looks like they want data on all charging practices, Level 2 and Level 3. I've reserved a SL trim level, so won't apply to me. But this does seem to say that SV models will not have a Level 3 charger in them.

Yep, that's what we were told when the car first went on sale. I thought Nissan had back-tracked from that though, and all cars were now going to come with L3 capability. OR they never did change their minds and just went silent on the issue. OR they changed their minds and now it's not going to come with L3 capability again.

Check out the new and updated EV Project Web Portal

There is a software demonstration of the role of the web portal

and additional information and FAQ's pertaining to the program

Check it out at http://www.theevproject.com/

The software portal may be accessed by clicking on the 'Watch Software Video Preview' button

Clicking OVERVIEW bring up a page with the FAQ button

Note: Question 5 asks What will be the role of fast charging?
The reply is The Nissan EVs included in the program will be fast-charge capable.

I do believe this confirms Level 3 Chargers for all participating Nissan LEAFs, regardless of model

By the way, lots and lots of interesting documents are available on the website.

... also on the Overview page is a link (button) to the available documents 'EV Project Documents'
