Split the cost of ownership (insurance, title and registration) with your small group of users. One ICE (instead of 2-4) sits around until someone amongst your group needs to use it.

Thanks for the interesting idea Phoenix. I just today decided to sell my gasoline car (an old paid-off Ford Escort that worked fine), and did it within a few hours. What tipped the scale for me was calling around and I realized that there are somewhat affordable deals to rent from Enterprise for the weekends, along the pathway of my travel. It's still not an ideal solution (for example, I will need to arrange for shaded parking for my Leaf, and I will need to comform to the hours of the agencies), but I think it just added up for me (various reasons, pro and con).

To answer your question - So far I've been pretty much the only highway-capable BEV owner in this county, to my knowledge. You can get an idea of things by taking a look at the location of my garage on plugshare.com in zip code 85648.

One additional thought here to Nissan:

When I called around, I tried to verify that I would be able to find a shaded parking spot for my Leaf near the rental agency, but I was unable to really make sure of this. I'll try separately to make a suggestion to Chelsea and Nissan that, particularly in the high-heat concern areas like parts of Arizona, California, Texas, Florida, etc., that if they are able to arrange some sort of deal either with Nissan rentals and-or with rental agencies that a question to ask will be whether the rental points can extend themselves beyond the usual to help Leaf drivers secure shaded parking, and perhaps some complentary level I charging, for the days they will be gone with the rental car.

Since you are leasing your LEAF, I would say let the heat of parking outside be Nissan's problem. If I owned my LEAF and had to park outside in AZ heat, I would invest in a pop-up white canopy (or solar PV canopy) and put it over my car while parked, maybe even place some kind of white reflective ground cover under my EV, all to prevent heat absorption. Okay, by then, might as well just build a carport/garage. ; )

Hi Phoenix, as I think about it, this does bring up the question of whether anyone has found a particular car cover helps to protect from sun and heat build-up? If so, I might take the risk of it being stolen.

With respect to decision-making, indeed I'm leasing, but even if ultimately Nissan takes responsibility for any degradation to my battery, I'd rather make a reasonable best effort over the time I'm leasing to follow good practices... several reasons for this.

Depending on how far away your local Enterprise office is, they can "pick you up" as they always tout in their ads. Hertz Local Edition does the same.

EDIT: entering your zip code (from an earlier post) on Enterprise's website shows their Nogales office to be only 11 miles away. That should be close enough for them to pick you up.

HLE has also deducted the cost of a taxi ride (up to a certain point) from my bill when they were too busy to come pick me up. I believe Enterprise might have the same offer.

Thanks, it sounds like you are well ahead of me on doing some of this. I spoke with the Nogales and the Green Valley Enterprise offices before selling my car, and verified a few things, including some really great-sounding deals for the weekends. The Green Valley office is perhaps (in some calculations) more pertinent because it is on the way to Tucson, and if I am going to need an ICV, it is likely because I need to take a longer trip in that direction, so if I rent in Nogales, there would be some backtracking over certain miles, whereas Green Valley is "on the way". However, it is 30 miles away and if I have them come pick me up instead of parking my EV nearby, then Nogales starts to look more logical.

Ideally, I would be able to drive toward Tucson and park my Leaf in safe hands at Ford in Green Valley (which is a sister-dealership to the Nissan dealership that leased me my Leaf). However, I am not necessarily going to hold my breath on realizing this ideal immediately, so it sounds like I should really think about the Nogales Enterprise with a pickup for some near-term purposes.
