How about a software update that displays the GID number in this space. Surely some info is being sent to it already. I may be underestimating the ease at which this could be done but seems to me that an LED (or whatever it is) can display any information it receives.

I too find the trees to be a waste of valuable display real estate.

The Tree is your punishment for no Tail Pipe Emissions :) You will take it and love it!!!..

I agree it would be cool if we could reprogram the dispaly to shows us anything we ask for. :)

I actually agree on getting rid of the "trees" display, and in fact, I'd forgotten it was even there until I saw this new topic :). But just to respond to some of the emissions/environmental stuff (which no doubt has all been said in this forum a hundred times), the thing that recently struck me is the hydrocarbon fluids leak problem that ICEs seem to have in spades. Every time I walk across an empty parking space, I realize I'm getting oil and gas and antifreeze residue on my shoes, and that much of it ends up in storm drains. EVs are not completely fluid-free, but ICEs seem to leak stuff like crazy, and it's nasty stuff. It's not just the stuff that comes out of tailpipes that is the issue. If every car were an EV, think how much cleaner our driveways, parking lots, and streets would be!

Because rightly or wrongly there are plenty of smart, not ignorant people in the wider world that are unconvinced of the economics or technology and view catastrophic AGW as being politically driven and not by the science.
Yes, but those smart people think they know better than specialists in the field (climate scientists), which is why I use the term anti-science. It's called the Dunning-Kruger Effect:

How about showing how much money you saved by not buying Gas ? You punch in what you believe is the gas price and the cost of electricity in your area, and the Leaf keeps a running count of your savings for each mile you drive..

Please, folks, let's not turn this thread into yet another pro-green/anti-green debate. We have a whole section of the board called Environmental Issues dedicated to that.

That exact ability is one of the coolest things I learned when a friend took me for a spin in his new Tesla. I gotta say that is one impressive piece of machinery. But short of that capability, which I suspect may be beyond what we can hope for from Nissan, it would be great if we could come to some sort of agreement here as to what we would most like to see up where the trees are. If we speak with one voice, Nissan does often listen to what we say.

While the tree building is pretty silly, the arc with segments really can be used to teach efficient driving. It isn't perfect but it is a good guide for typical driving conditions. If you can accelerate and keep all the segments lit you will get better mileage. Hard to do going up steep hills though

This is exactly what I use it for. You can do a rough estimation of the friction/regen braking too. While braking, the more segments, the more regen. It shoots down if you jab on the brake peddle, and feathering lightly gets you the most segments and the strongest regen. Of course this is kinda "duh" but it's a constant reminder for me. :)

+1 Chop the trees from the dash. Useless and pathetic. I do care about the environment and I do want to protect and preserve it, but I don't want to have an image of being a "tree-hugger" and leaf's design is not helping there to begin with... let alone growing trees on the dash.

Trees on the dash are pure fluff, of course.

BUT, didn't CARWINGS online used to offer some data on cumulative carbon emissions savings (based on "eco trees" units or some such squishy metric, unfortunately)?

It seemed to me that the CARWINGS info was potentially useful and sound if it could be translated into pounds of carbon dioxide NOT emitted by one's LEAF. But now, logging into the LEAF owners' portal and peeking around at the data available, I'm no longer seeing even "eco trees" information on my LEAF.

Am I missing something or has Nissan dropped the feature? I know there may still be some "eco trees" info on the CARWINGS LED screen in the car, but I thought there was more online.

Anyone following this who can enlighten/update me?

+1 Now this would appeal to a lot of other buyers. Just show them what they are Actually saving by driving an EV and you'll sell more. I had no intent of buying my 2013 Leaf. My local dealer came to my work for Earth-Day and I took it for a test drive. I was just curious to see how it handled. I was impressed at its ability and features. Then when I was asked what I spend in gas each week, I said about $75 and he just made a comment that I could probably get into the Leaf for that or less per-month on a lease. Since I only drive 11 miles to work each-way, my 2006 Ram Hemi pickup is not good on gas. It’s much better on the highway as the engine can drop 4 cylinders but since all of my weekly commute is back-roads, I decided to look into a lease. I got a great deal from my dealer, as they also want me to spread-the-word here at work, as I’m the 1st Leaf / EV owner here of over 500 employee’s. So adding the $7500 government tax break, I couldn’t pass on the deal!

So I look at it as I'm driving the Leaf for free and I love saving trips to the gas station. I’m not ‘tree-hugger’, as you can tell by my gas-guzzling truck, which I still have of course ;-)

I've taken a few of my co-workers for rides, as they are also curious about it. Now a couple of them are considering looking into the Leaf more!

Dave...

I would much rather have the SOC percentage up there that the silly tree meter. As for the shifting of the pollution from the car to the power plant; don't forget that it takes about 5 kw of electricity to refine 1 gallon of gas. And that's on top of all the power it takes to move the oil around before and after it's refined.

If you want to have fun, coast along in neutral and then press and release the accelerator... You will see the tree-o-meter go from maximum scale to about 1/4 scale!

You really shouldn't quote numbers like that, because they aren't true, or are at the least very misleading. Here is a long thread discussing the matter:
7.5 kWh of electricity to produce a gallon of gasoline?
The conclusion reached there was that refining gasoline uses up the equivalent energy of 7.5 kWh. That's because the refining process is about 83% efficient. (i.e. about 17% of the energy available in the oil has been lost by the time it becomes gasoline.) I believe someone showed numbers indicating that actual use of electricity was about 1/3 kWh per gallon.

Look, I'm about as concerned about the climate effects of gasoline as the most extreme "lefties", but I don't think it helps our cause to play fast and free with statistics.

I am very self absorbed and couldn't be bothered to read the thread but judging by the title it seems everone here hates trees or something and wants them gone.

What will be left to hug?

Where will the Leafs grow from?

It's still there

- Log on to the owners' portal

- click on "Show LEAF Status" (Silly Nissan programmers -- why would I have logged on if I DIDN'T want to see?)

- click on "Launch Carwings", cleverly hidden near the bottom of the page

- The CarWings home page should show you your Eco Tree Record

- Click the Eco Tree "tab" for a graph

- in Driving History you can see your estimated CO2 reduction by month or year.

The drive thru line works for growing trees for no reason!

If there is a big wait I can get a full tree.

Makes me happy to know I am doing my part.

Actually, in the context where you would talk about how much energy it takes to produce gasoline the efficiency of the process and how much energy your end up with is irrelevant. The argument is that with an EV you are just shifting the pollution to the power plant. The rebuttal is that if you are going to talk about the process of making electricity then you need to put the process for making gasoline on the table too. Regardless of how efficient the refining process is you still have to use that energy to refine the oil and producing that energy is not emission free.

Personally, I watch the bubbles as to my driving efficiency than that half circle horse shoe thingy. And as far as the trees -- I never get to see them b/c we constantly stop and charge that car which clean-slates (clear-cuts) them!

I realize that many Leaf owners have some inflated sense of importance that they are involved in some great environmental cause saving the world, but the vast majority of people (like myself) view that as bunk. The more the Leaf can divorce itself from this environmental mindset (symbolized by the Leaf and Tree icons) the more it will appeal to the vast majority of people who are more interested in reliable economic vehicle and not some overly subsidized environmental project that is doomed to failure.

haha! True that. I just like the car due to it's efficiency and nice drive. I agree, I love real trees, not the dash tree, loose it. Gimme numbers.
