As others have mentioned, you can cancel the recurring part of the payment once the payment has been made.

I will do some digging and see if there is a way to make the recurring optional before the payment is made.

I don't mind contributing ($30), but as I pressed the button to make the payment my eyes caught the recurring language. I had intended to make a one time payment for this year. The recurring payment should be a clear option that you choose, not the default.

Shortly after sending the payment I went to checked the Paypal account. I wanted to cancel the recurring part, but was afraid it might somehow cancel the payment for this year that I had just sent. If I had "chosen" recurring payment I would not "feel" like I had been tricked, and have to spend time later to undo it. So, "Yes" I would appreciate the "0ption" be loud and clear up front.

Same w me. I started to sign up, but when I saw that it was an automatically renewing subscription, I canceled. If there is a way to make a donation to MNL, I would be happy to do so. I don't even mind the ads too much.
Blessings,
Holland

2 LEAFS, bought 1 week apart. 2013 S for me, 2013 SV is wife's. Both manufactured May 2013. I lost first bar at 36,000. Wife still has all bars at 50,000.

+1 - it's not a big deal to go in and cancel the subscription on the Paypal side.

Immediately after renewing I received email from Paypal with explicit instructions:
To change or cancel your agreement with Michael Szostak, log in to your PayPal account, go to your Profile, and click My money. Update your agreement in the "My preapproved payments" section.
But I think I'll just leave it on automatic.

Yeah, but like a previous poster said, they didn't know if 'Cancel' meant canceling the payment. So those instructions leave that part out about clicking on 'Cancel' to just cancel the automatic/recurring payment.

-1. I won't renew until auto-renewal is not the default. I don't care how easy it is to cancel. I'm strongly opposed to the concept of "opt-out".
I noticed you're still working with polymers.

the convenience of auto renewal is not convenient for me. I paid barely a month ago and due to paypal NOT giving me info, I also cancelled the renewal thingy as well and was two seconds away from disputing the charge to my CC company because i didnt remember the details of it. i mean doing a renewal during Xmas present buying season is not a good idea. too easy to forget in the online rush (did all my shopping online this year with exception of small amount of stocking stuffers...of which 90% of those were online too!)

now, before i disputed it, i asked pay pal for details and all they gave me was email addy pointing to a website i had no recognition of and a email addy that sounded vaguely familiar with, i still didnt remember it.

so it was after i cancelled the reoccuring charge on the phone, i get an email from paypal security that tells me its for THIS site that i realize it was a valid charge while i was on hold with capital one...

so i blame paypal for not giving me the details over the phone (after a ton of verification steps) that they provided me in a plain text email...

so thankfully they were slow in answering and I hung up before submitting request to retrieve my $30...

so, ya... everything is fine. my "orange name" status is still in tact! ;)

So Michael; send me a PM in 11 months or so with a reminder

The subscription system now has the option to choose whether or not you want auto-renewal.

Dave: The system will automatically send a reminder email in 11 months and 3 weeks to let you know your subscription is near expiry.

If someone wants to test it and confirm it is working correctly that'd be great :)
