This has nothing to do with EVs or SoCal, but I want to share it with my friends because it is so cool.

The Cosmos episode on gravity showed a simulation of our far future, when the Milky Way collides with Andromeda. The billions of stars in each galaxy do not collide, but gravity totally disrupts both galaxies until they finally merge into a new "Milkdromeda."

Yesterday I heard a great talk at Pomona College on Galactic Collisions. These collisions are quite common; perhaps 2% of the billions of galaxies we can see are colliding, but the full collision process takes several billion years. Since each star in each galaxy is gravitationally coupled to all the other stars, it takes an array of 50,000 computer cores several days to simulate one collision. The video linked below not only shows a typical collision in great detail, but it also superimposes astronomical images of actual collisions in process that match each step of the simulation.

Next Gathering a week from tomorrow, in Santa Ana.
I am looking forward to seeing you (almost) all then.
Also, I am hoping to have something silver to show you.
Yes, I am excited, which is difficult for an alien like me.

It appears that I could be selling my white 2011 LEAF SL with
QC port and Rear-View camera, and an 8 year or 100k mile
Nissan extended warranty. No dings, scratches, or repairs,
and the latest firmware, probably including the original GID-Meter
and a Dongle and Android Smartphone for using the Leaf Spy Pro app.
Purchased in March 2011 and at about 20k miles now, vin 855.

If you know anybody that might be interested, please let me
know before I actually need to actually put it up for sale.

Merry Christmas, Gary, Nancy, and Heidi

It's been awhile but I will see you all there.

YAAY!

As it turns out, I'll also be joining you guys, since my breakfast choices for Saturday are between going with Naomi to her Disney peeps Holiday breakfast or kibbutz with you guys.

I choose you guys (aren't you lucky!).

It looks like my wife will come with me this Saturday, and I will
stop by to give "one-eye" Phil a ride, if he is up to it.

After almost 2 weeks of laying on one side to keep his ailing eye positioned
with its air bubble "just so" to aid the retinal detachment repair, Phil is anxious
to be able to get out and celebrate with us. They had to remove
the gel from the eye and inflate it with air, which should gradually
be replaced by new fluid. The best news is that the prognosis is good.
In the mean time, no slapping him on the back of the head, please.

Apparently Kat will be joining us, and I am really looking forward
to seeing her again. If people keep coming "out of the woodwork",
we might need extra tables.

Wednesday last week, my wife said that she wanted to give me
"something special" for Christmas, but I did not understand, at first,
what she had in mind. My imagination raced, but no, it was not that!
Not pregnant, and not a Death-by-Chocolate cake, what could it be?

After a fast and furious few heart-pounding few days and nights...
our new silver "Nicholas" vehicle arrived yesterday, so I now join
the "EVolution" that seems to have captured many "rEVolutionaries".
It is so powerful that one should drive it with great care, and I got
the least powerful, but most range, of the series.

So, it appears that we have taken a "huge step" for us, into the
next generation of the "giant step for humanoids".

Love to all, and looking forward to seeing you Saturday. :p

Hmm...with all that is going on, maybe I should cancel my trip so I can attend.

I'll be in Long Beach for an EV study at 9am - 10am, so I'll plan to stop by on my return to San Diego.

Well to keep adding to the excitement! I have a special guest that will be joining us as well. He just flew in from Europe and used to work for Brusa and now for Nissan GmbH :D

This will be a great last meet of the year!!!

Wow! This truly sounds like an epic breakfast coming up!! It'll be great to see Kat again and good job, Gary, getting Nancy to join us. Now I've got to put TomB on the spot: surely you'll have a guest you can invite?

We may even tip the gender scale our way this Saturday! Ladies?!

With somewhere around 26-plus people attending our end-of-the-year
Gathering, we had a great time, indeed. Many arrived like raindeer, two by two,
bringing a spouse, a girlfriend, or a daughter, substantially and delightfully
increasing our f/m ratio with bright eyes, wonderful smiles, and the warmth
from hearts like beams of sunshine on a flower-filled meadow in the Spring.

Further, we had at least one sleigh load of 3, and 4 arriving in my
new silver "Nicholas". With a range of around 230 miles, it is amazing to see
what somebody can do with somewhat more than 7000 "electric drill" batteries.

Wow, what a Christmas present. Thanks a bunch sweetie, for your wonderful,
thoughtful, kind, giving heart, and also for this "something special" that I never thought
that we would ever have, to share as we create some "adventures" together.
Thanks, love.

It was a real pleasure to see the many new faces, even though
I apologize for not making enough time to visit enough with some of
of you. Handling urgent inquiries like "How can I convince my wife
to allow/condone/accept/suggest upgrading, perhaps somewhat
irrationally, to a Tesla?" took some time, and some was a bit of a
blur, but plesse come again when we can do more "sharing".

Dori, thanks for the very thoughtful words in your Christmas cards,
and the packets of flower seeds to start a new year.

Ho, ho, ho, Merry Christmas to each and every one.
I suppose that Peace in Earth would be asking for...
a dream of splendid goodness, where all the time, efforts,
and resources spent on war, hate, and competition could be
spent on cooperation, colaboration, cheer, ... and Love.

Thanks, and Love, from the GIDs.

Our next Gathering will be on January 10th, 2015, for breakfast
at the Hometown Buffet in Cerritos, as indicated in the first post
of this thread. Hopefully I will see many smiley faces there.
Cheers all, Gary

Ah, Gary, it was so great to see you and Nancy and everyone else with lots of hugs and info exchanged. I had my solar system question answered by the "brain trust". So wonderful to see the smiles and everyone, including me, in good spirits and health. And the Teslas! Oh, the Tesla envy was fierce. But just to be near was super. Thank you, Gary, for being the glue, our branch manager, and all around super alien. We love you! And yes, peace on earth.

Concerning Tesla envy, for gas-users, or those with lease payments or a car to trade in,
or those considering the seemingly-insane purchase price...

An important part of the monetary equation is the current expenses that you will be replacing.
For example a substantial trade-in value, a current lease or finance payment, or whatever
you spend on fuel, gasoline or electric. With the Tesla S SuperChargers, your fuel is included,
and the more you drive, the more valuable that is. The $10k fed and state incentives are also
very helpful, but the significant Sales Tax is not so much.

For most of us, there is much more to the EV equation, some of which is emotional,
like "What do you want to do with the rest of your life?", or "How can I persuade
my spouse to join the evangelicalism (or insanity)?".

My wife suggested the Tesla, seemingly out of the blue, but coincidentally two weeks before
Christmas, and right after I spent a month or more making a considerable effort to be nice to her,
and trying to avoid making "helpful suggestions" to her. Kindness or the lottery might be
the only answer, but even there, YMMV.

But, with the many SuperCharger locations, Tesla has made this a real touring vehicle.
Visiting a Tesla Store is fairly easy, and visiting a Tesla Service Center is really
an experience - real red carpet Service, as I experienced this past weekend.
Diagnosis on Saturday, and part replacement by appointment on Sunday,
all in the middle of them preparing perhaps 30 or 40 cars for delivery before
the end of 2014.

Happy New Year to you all, with Love.
Gary, Nancy, Heidi, ... and Nicholas

Our next Gathering is this coming Saturday, January 10th 2015,
the first of this new year. As usual, Breakfast from about 8 to
11 or 12 or so... at the Hometown Buffet in Cerritos, just north
of South Street, about 3 blocks east of the 605 freeway.

The South Street exit is the first exit from 605 south of the
91 and 605 intersection. I hope to see you there.
Cheers, Gary

Hopefully I should arrive very shortly after 8 am this Saturday
morning at the Hometown Buffet on South Street in Cerritos,
driving Nicolas (Tesla S85), and transporting Boomer.

See you there, all good souls welcome.
