Anyone heard of this third party Nissan Leaf battery expansion?

It is an empty debate and off topic. No I have not heard of this supplier.

I will reiterate my original comment that I am pleased to see the aftermarket offering some solutions to battery replacement.

This looks like a pack dropped in the back of the car and posted onto a blog. Regardless I would caution anyone that would consider something like this to do serious research first on the safely and track record of any company. Personally I think the entire concept here is too late and too little and has no profit for a company that does it properly. There are so many safety variables here it would take to long to list. Just buy an EV with the proper range.

where are you seeing this?

Take a look and give me your opinions.

http://hybridindustries.webs.com/.
What a weird site.

http://hybridindustries.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoid=188862608 is an image lifted from various places like http://www.inautonews.com/nissan-manufactures-lithium-ion-packs-for-the-leaf-at-tennessee-plant/nissan-leaf-battery-pack-images-01.

http://hybridindustries.webs.com/apps/photos/album?albumid=15363698 also has Prius stuff lifted from various places like https://web.archive.org/web/20110814104243/http://privatenrg.com/#Full_SOC.

http://hybridindustries.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoid=188856655 appears to be lifted from the near the bottom of http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_batt.html, specifically this graph: http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/pri_batt_430.jpg. bwilson4web of Priuschat often makes graphs that looks like that. He likes to graph everything. :)

http://hybridindustries.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoid=188855405 was lifted from https://www.flickr.com/photos/amtraker/5105973771. It's from a celebration mentioned at http://www.notcot.com/archives/2010/10/prius-10th-anniversary-in-mali.php that I wasn't able to attend. :( The pic at http://hybridindustries.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoid=188855403 came from http://www.autobeyours.com/gifs/inventory%20prius%20parts/Prius%20engine%20and%20transmission.jpg.

http://hybridindustries.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoid=188855399 was taken from http://lusciousgarage.com/blog/gen_1_prius_battery_failure/, a shop that specializes in Prius repair and maintenance in SF.

Unfortunately, due to the robots.txt file at http://hybridindustries.webs.com/robots.txt, I can't force http://archive.org/web/ to archive the above pages. :(

I haven't dug around much on the above site, but I knew there were a lot of familiar looking images, mainly the Prius bar stuff lifted from https://web.archive.org/web/20110814104243/http://privatenrg.com/#Full_SOC since I used to visit that site a lot. Also, I've seen tons of graphs from bwilson4web so I know his style.

So far, doesn't sound like a very credible company to me for safely and properly adding what the OP's asking about.

Again... You may see no value in it, but as electric vehicles get older and older there will be more people interested in keeping those cars on the road, and in doing so will want to make them as up to date in capacity (range) as they can. Our current cars are quickly getting behind the curve and I believe many will look for a way to keep them viable. When you can buy the car cheap, you have a lot more room to play with engineering... You personally may just move on to the next new toy, while someone else for other reasons may want to repurpose or add to, what in many respects, could be made to be like new.

I would highly doubt there would be enough people interested in keeping those cars on the road to support a business. Also keep in mind that due to limited range your potential customers will have to be very close to you, pay to ship the car to you and possibly ship it back or pay for shipping of a very large heavy battery then find someone else to do the work. There are a few people still keeping replacement batteries alive for the original insight but at least with that car it runs fine on gas when the battery goes so people can road trip it for a day to get it done and the battery can ship fedex anywhere for max a few hundred then 2 people can lift it into the car. Plus the other thing to consider is the car is very unique and a two seater that's kinda fun to drive. The whole market for EV converted cars is driven by either speed or passion. Either you want a drag race car or you want to drive a car you love and have passion for with zero emissions or just better performance than it ever had. Even in that market the best way to convert an old car to go fast is with a cheap DC motor and controller and almost all the controller companies have gone out of business or stopped making controllers.

There will never be enough people who LOVE the original leaf to support an aftermarket battery business, especially when the used 2016 30kWh cars will be a significant upgrade with everything else the same that they love(a good condition one would give the range of a worn out 12/13 with a second partially worn out batter). Once the off leases come from those cars when the Bolt, Model 3 and Leaf 2 are out I'd expect them to have values similar or lower than 12s are now and be a much better buy than a 12 is now.

We are not just talking Leaf. We are talking all future and past cars of all makes including full pack replacement as well as range extenders. Even If a person had a 200 mile range car, they may want or need to go more... It is only human nature. Many also still say that Tesla isn't viable and isn't long enough range, and electric vehicles will never be a reality for widespread use... But IMO a larger demand for battery options will be there in the fairly near future when electric vehicles proliferate. Many businesses fail, and we can point to some big auto companies that were saved by government. More businesses fail than succeed over the long haul for a plethora of reasons, and some are lucky enough to make it. 3rd party battery installers and charging infrastructure companies suffer from some of the same pitfalls but they will be overcome.

http://hybridindustries.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoid=188862604 can be found in post 12 of http://priuschat.com/threads/ok-is-this-for-real-or-just-snake-oil.144381/. The Craigslist ad there is long dead and unfortunately, nobody archived it. Wonder if these 2 places are one and the same.

That's most definitely a Leaf peak sitting in the back of Gen 2 Prius. One can tell by the not folded down cupholder in the center console near the top of the pic.

I don't know :( 2017 Chevrolet Bolt. 2018 Tesla M3. Then there is now talk of ford doing a long range EV. I am wondering when is nissan going to respond to this? Carlos Goshn already said the company is working on responses... I just wonder when they will put it out. I want my e-nv200. GIVE IT TO ME NISSAN!

This goofy company rears its head every now and then on various Leaf Facebook groups I'm on, usually from newbies to Leaf and definitely from folks who have NEVER had one of their contraptions installed.

Has anyone actually heard of success stories from non-shills in terms of adding extra battery capacity to a Leaf via this goofy company? Note my comments at http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=460259#p460259 about all the lifted images.

We've had threads on them as far back as 2015 (http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=21111) and even the fraud alert at http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=513194#p513194 that's still up at https://thehybridhaven.com/fraud-alert-hybrid-haven-not-affiliated-hybrid-industries/.

Oddly, http://hybridindustries.webs.com/apps/photos/ has had some updates but it still seems mostly like a hodgepodge of lifted images. I haven't had a chance to check on the origins via https://www.tineye.com/ and https://images.google.com/ of some of the new ones that popped up.

Surely, if they were credible, we should've heard of multiple success stories on MNL and various Leaf FB groups...

I think you answered your own question. Anyone that's going to do this properly needs to be highly capitalized and experienced and frankly there are just not enough used LEAFs in the USA to make this a viable option to get into the market unless you are a hack. Plenty of people have been scammed by outfits like this and you can't talk anyone out of doing this once they are determined they want it. Naturally, those that have been burned by such outfits don't share much out of humiliation and have moved on to longer range EVs at a higher ultimate cost. It's really simple to do the math on a business model like this, it just makes no sense at every level.

I have tried sending emails to this company with strange results. Yes I long for a long range EV, but I don't think taking a short range EV to this company for a long range conversion is a good idea.

I'll just keep driving ICEV's until I can get a long range EV that I can afford.

Can you sorta describe "strange results"? Emails ignored? Did they give evasive replies? Did they just hem and haw? Was the price, what they'd deliver and when a moving target? Did they make all sorts of errors in their replies and get the units wrong?

But yeah, given the lack of any success stories and and all the lifted images I discovered (some of which I'd seen before since I used to be active on Priuschat), the place seems sketchy.

It's been a while, about when I first got my Leaf. But I do remember getting a short reply at first saying they didn't do that kind of work. Then about a week or two later I got another email saying "Call me and I'll talk!" And that was pretty much it. I didn't persue it any further.

There's a comment over at https://www.facebook.com/groups/nissan.leaf.owners.group/permalink/2447368388667321/?comment_id=2447389105331916&comment_tracking=%7B%22tn%22%3A%22R%22%7D which claims the outfit has gone out of business.

Unfortunately, that FB group is a closed group. You must join it to see the posts.

The inautonews.com URL is dead but the pic of the pack is available at many other places thanks to TinEye.com like https://cleantechnica.com/2016/01/06/a-tale-of-3-battery-packs/.

And sigh... this company reared its head again today on a Leaf FB group. It seems like this is a "company" where its whereabouts refuse to die.
