Re: the Martinson Model 3 Route. I should be back from my trip, but getting to San Clemente at 8:30am on Tuesday July 31 would be a terrible ordeal for me. However it looks like Temecula later the same day might be feasible, and much easier for me. Boomer, did you get time for your proposed meetup at San Clemente SC by email contact? I have sent such a request.

Here’s a reminder for any of our group who would like to meet for breakfast at the San Clemente Superchargers in support of John Martinson and his son Neo, who are completing an epic road trip through all of the western states and Alberta and BC, in support of sustainability.

8 am meetup at the Superchargers, 8:30 breakfast at Ruby’s, 9:30 the Martinsons leave for Temecula. Anyone who would like to could form an escort part way or all the way to Temecula.

Please comment here if you can make it.

Thanks.

We had about 10 to 12 people at the HTB Gathering last Saturday.

Next EV Gathering is 4 Aug at Golden Corral.
After that, the 18th of Aug at HTB.

What route will they take from SC to Temecula, the scenic over the mountain via Ortega, or through the flatland via Oceanside?

Hopefully we can join the adventure.

August 2018 finishes our 8th year of EV Gatherings. September begins our 9th year.

We helped celebrate this anniversary by ordering a Tesla Model 3, in Silver, with the standard 18" energy-saving Aero-wheels.

To our surprise, the very next day we got a call to schedule Delivery ... the car (the sticker says it was made in July 2018), was either already in SoCal, or on a truck scheduled to arrive "soon" ... because we took delivery 3 days later!!!

Less than 90 hours from placing the Order online on Friday to getting the M3 Out-the-Door on Tuesday! And, I suspect it could have been sooner if the Delivery Center had any earlier open Delivery Slots.

See you all on the 4th of August at the Golden Lantern in the City of Industry. Cheers.

I assume the faster way via 5 and then 76 east.,
I’m thinking of escorting them as far as Oceanside before waving goodbye.

More on Tesla Auto Pilot 2 (AP2) based on Elon's 2nQ Earnings call a few days ago, using tips from last Saturday's breakfast:
AP2 V9 SW coming "soon" a few weeks, will be big advance, but SW only.

AP2 Hardware announced during call, now in advance test, will ship in every car some time in 2019.
Fall 2017 Nvidia GPU upgraded in new cars since, with promise to retrofit all AP2 cars. This upgrade X10 performance, but now it has been supplanted by AP3. Elon promises it will be directly replaceable in existing AP2 cars.

Basic Neural Net operation is a convolution of a NxN subset pattern matrix against all the pixels in a scene, looking for close match to the pattern. This is a structured matrix multiply, highly parallel. GPUs can do this with far less fetches from main memory, but GPU is still too general purpose. Highest efficiency for this operation can be achieved with a Systolic Array, an old concept decades old, but only recently have chips had enough real estate for implementation. Basically the whole matrix operation is in hardware.

Google has had a Systolic Array chip they call TPU (Tensor Processing Unit) for at least a year, but they have not sold the chips, only access to TPU units in the cloud.

There have been reports that while AP2 has been using only its forward 3 cameras, the side cameras have been in use in "ghost" mode, in which deviations between how the driver is driving and how advanced AP would have driven are reported using data from these cameras.

Tesla calls there Systolic Array chip simply an "AI" chip. It should enable very good pattern recognition through all cameras. However, many important driving decisions require high-level rule-based logic. It is not clear AI chip could help this part.

We had a very nice Gathering last Saturday at the Golden Corral, with about 10 people attending.

Our next Gathering is Aug 18th at HTB, which will end our 8th year of EV Gatherings.

We will skip Saturday, Sep 1st, due to Labor Day weekend activities, thus having a 3-week gap before we start out 9th year of Gatherings with breakfast on Saturday, Sep 8th, at the Golden Corral.

Please pray, or at least radiate Good Thoughts, for Linda and the recovery of sight in her damaged eye (she fell). We are hoping that the apparent loss of sight is just a lot of blood in the eye's gel, and not lasting damage to the eye's retina.

Planning 2 C U soon, Gary.

Thanks Gary,
And best wishes for a healthy recovery for Linda.
I have had quite some experience with retina repair, so if Linda would like to talk, I’m happy to be available.
