How important is charging only to 80%?

Are you saying that we here at MNL are telling people never to charge a Leaf to 100%?
Maybe so. I don't recall who, if any.
Resurrecting a zombie thread... to satisfy my curiosity about something else, I did find a few. This is probably nowhere near complete.

I see only two examples of people telling someone to never charge to 100% if they never need to do so. This is hardly the same as advising to just not charge to 100%, ever.

I just love this topic: it always generates lots of discussion!
The fact is, only owners of MY '11-'12 Leafs can (easily) charge to 80%, so no matter what you think/believe, many can't do it even if they want to. There is significant data to support the harmful effects of letting the battery pack sit @100% charge for more than a few hours (especially in the heat), so I charge to 80% whenever possible (which is most days now). In fact, I can tell you that degradation on my battery pack has significantly slowed (measured by Ahr) since the first of the year (I believe) due to the fact that my work commute has been significantly reduced...so I haven't been forced to charge to 100% as much (and some days not at all).
IMHO, removing the "80% charge" option from MY '13+ was a huge mistake, and I continue to use that option (frequently) to this day.

To be clear, it was removed on US market model year '14+ Leafs. '13 Leafs still have it. In fact, not only we can we do it via the charging timer, but it can also be done (w/o timers) via a "long life" mode charge to 80% option. I use the midnight to midnight timer trick (as someone here taught me). That way, I can remotely trigger charging to 100% later in the day, if needed. (i.e. charge to 80% and on days I need 100%, about 2 hours before I leave work, I remotely trigger charge now).

Some Leafs outside the US still had it even longer (e.g. '15 Leaf in Ireland: http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=416013#p416013).
