I'm now in Vegas for the "con". I ended up taking a bus. I took https://global.handelsblatt.com/mobility/german-greyhound-rival-prepares-launch-in-california-flixbus-bus-travel-airline-car-passengers-transportation-886932 which I hadn't heard of about a day before. I gotta take Greyhound back. GH works FAR better for my schedule but the LA bus depot I have to wait for almost 3 hours on before take another bus is kinda sketchy and in a bad part of LA.

As I posted in another forum:
They had a nice mirror universe "museum" w/the emperor's "throne" and various weapons, insignia and uniforms from that universe. Looks like the items were identical to the ones at http://www.startrek.com/article/discovery-mirror-universe-experience-opens-at-comic-con.

Jason Isaacs was a bit hard to understand from the front due to acoustics/echoes and his accent. I tried to ask Jason Isaacs the first question and either he blew me off (and maybe couldn't answer/wasn't allowed) or honestly couldn't hear it. I asked if we'll see "good" Lorca in the 2nd season. He said something like "bad mic, can't hear". I asked again and asked if this is the last we've seen of Lorca. He blew me off (I don't even remember the reply) and moved onto the mic on the other side! :O

The two folks behind me asked me "what happened?" and were surprised. I just shrugged and said maybe he can't answer.

Was surprised to learn that he was pitched the role and originally turned it down, so he claims. In the process of being convinced that he wouldn't just be in the shadows of Kirk, he knew going in that he'd be from the evil parallel universe.

I was surprised to meet a few folks at the con who hadn't seen ST: D. Was having dinner at a Thai restaurant and it turned out 4 or 5 people to my left were attending the con. One of them hadn't seen ST: D (they didn't want to have to pay for CBS All Access).

Really, Harry Mudd? That reduces the number of eps I'd be interested to see by at least 25%.
LOL! Harry Mudd was in 2 eps of ST:D. The second one he was in (Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad) was actually quite good.

I don't want to spoil too much for you but I kept wondering if we'd see Stella. There were replicas of her in the TOS ep https://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/I,_Mudd_(episode).

Since CBS is still pointing a gun at their own heads while demanding we watch this show on their pay network, I don't see me watching it soon enough for me to remember any spoilers. ;-)

Latest ep (S2:E6 "The Sounds of Thunder") was quite good. Captain Pike is turning out to be an interesting character. It really tied into the Short Trek "The Brightest Star" (the best or 2nd best Short Trek). The Short Trek "The Escape Artist" w/Harry Mudd again was not bad.

The whole Spock thing seems like such a tease. We still (in the show) haven't seen adult Spock.

Prior to S2:E6, some folks (like at work) have commented that some of the S2 eps seem more like Star Trek eps.

I know of at least two "Adult" ST videos, if you are interested. Both feature Spock. ;-)
LOL! I'm not talking about that.

Basically, there's a search for Spock (heh) in season 2. We've seen a child Spock and child Michael Burnham, but they're still searching for Spock.

Anyway, I'm enjoying the show even though it's turned out to be so different from previous Trek shows.

We'll see see if CBS relents and puts it on DVD while I'm still alive.
Season 1 has been available in disc format since mid-November 2018:
Code:
https://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Discovery-Season-Blu-ray/dp/B07G2D87C1
. They tried to pitch it and the specials/extras available on disc formats when I was at the Vegas Star Trek convention last year.

You can subscribe to CBS AA for $5.99/month if you're ok with ads: https://www.cbs.com/all-access/subscription/plan/. You get only a week free but sometimes, they've had deals where it's a month free. Some folks have paid for a month then tried canceling, but where then at that point were offered another month for free. No guarantees there.

How about just subscribing for enough time to binge watch all the eps? The guy at https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/star-trek-discovery-cbs-spoilers.2132834/page-2#post-27097179 wants to wait until ep 10 of season 2 to subscribe. Avoid browsing the rest of that thread in case there are any spoilers.

Ep 10 should air March 21, 2019.

IMHO, it's worth at least 1 or 2 month's worth of CBS AA with ads just to watch the show. Also, if you travel outside the US and Canada and have a Netflix streaming subscription, you should be able to stream it while there.

I had to put the Amazon URL in code tags otherwise this forum totally messed up my links.

I actually meant to rent, but I'll look into it. Thanks.

EDIT: I actually tried to sign up for 1 month commercial free, but when I got to the Paypal button nothing happened when I pressed it. This happens with Firefox sometimes. Maybe I'll try later with Chrome. In the meantime, can I watch that through Tivo Roamio, or do I have to sit at my PC to watch? I don't do much of the latter. Some apps required that you have a cable provider; I dumped Time Warner several years ago for OTA and internet-based video. I guess I'll look this crap up...

EDIT Again: Nope. I'd have to get back into my old Xbox and the crappy interface with Microsoft, pay them, pay the fee...no thanks. It would cost me $60 per season if I buy the DVD. Watching it on my 19" square PC screen makes the most sense, but most likely I'll just keep waiting, even if that means watching it in Hell (with commercials) after I'm dead. ;)

I'm 90% sure that it doesn't require you to have any cable or satellite subscription. I know what you're referring to w/a bunch of other "channels" and their web sites.

https://cbsi.secure.force.com/CBSi/knowledgehome?categoryOne=Roku&categoryTwo=Apple_TV_AA&categoryThree=Fire_TV_AA&MainCategory=SUPPORTED+DEVICES&template=template_aa17&referer=cbs.com%2Faa lists the supported devices.

Current Chromecasts have a retail price of $35 (https://store.google.com/us/product/chromecast?hl=en-US). You can get them online or many B&M places (e.g. Best Buy, Target, Walmart). Per https://support.google.com/chromecast/answer/7022492?hl=en, https://store.google.com/us/product/chromecast_setup?hl=en-US that points to https://www.google.com/chromecast/setup/, looks like you need an iOS or Android device to set them up. (I have both.) Think of a Chromecast as like a set top box that's a dongle but has no remote control. You need another device like an iOS or Android device to control it. You do some stuff from a PC/Mac to Chromecast (I rarely do this) but setup from a computer has been apparently axed: https://9to5google.com/2018/12/30/chrome-72-killing-chromecast-setup-mac-windows/.

You can get a previous gen (round one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromecast#Second_generation) at some Walmarts for cheap (https://slickdeals.net/f/12212287-chromecast-v2-walmart-ymmv-17). I used Brickseek and found one at a Walmart Neighborhood Market when they were on clearance for $17. I couldn't find them anywhere in that store and had to ask a clerk. They were behind the customer service desk.

One of the Walmarts 27 miles from home allegedly has 8 in stock for $9 but I don't need any more.

(There were actually two versions of the original style Chromecasts that looked like USB flash drives: the original one and another later one that had a different FCC ID. The first round one that wikipedia calls 2nd gen came after that.)

I've mainly used CBS AA on Roku 3 and Apple TV 4K.

The only supported device I have is my old Xbox, and I abandoned that because of Microsoft Live (?), which is what you need to use it online. I appreciate the effort, but I don't want to add another device to my collection just so I can watch one show. Maybe I'll wait for cheaper used DVDs.

Original Xbox and Xbox 360 probably won't work anyway. They're not listed at https://cbsi.secure.force.com/CBSi/knowledgehome?categoryOne=Roku&categoryTwo=Apple_TV_AA&categoryThree=Fire_TV_AA&MainCategory=SUPPORTED+DEVICES&template=template_aa17&referer=cbs.com%2Faa.

Despite the name, Xbox One came out (apparently in Nov 2013) after original Xbox and Xbox 360. I don't even have an Xbox One since I don't care. I can't speak to CBS AA and whether it requires a paid subscription to Xbox Live.

19" square monitor? If you don't care too much about panel type (e.g. TN, IPS, etc.) you can get bigger ones for cheap these days: https://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100160979%20600556721%20601190102%208000%204814&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&PageSize=36&order=PRICE. Do check warranty length though. Seems like Acer and Asus have 3 year warranties but some might be as short as 1.

I'm fine with my monitor. It's low radiation and my face is close to it, so it's plenty big. But it isn't really like watching our 42" plasma TV. As I said, I'll get a DVD set, eventually.

Star Trek discovery is a hideous show.

The Orville is a great Star Trek like series.

I've watched a few eps of Orville. The main problem with that show is that it's mostly a comedy, and the more comedic episodes of ST have always turned me off. That isn't the fault of the show - it's a personal bias. Oh, and there are so many ST people involved in The Orville that it seems a bit incestuous.

(shrug) I dunno. I'm a huge Trek fan and am enjoying ST:D. Some folks who don't like the show or don't like having to pay for a service to see it call it STD.

Yeah, I've had someone recommend The Orville to me and says it's more like Star Trek than ST:D. I haven't gotten around to checking it out. I might...
