Kia Niro EV Gets Range Rating Of Over 300 Miles
https://insideevs.com/kia-niro-ev-range-over-300-miles/

301 miles WLTP, so expect EPA to be lower. It's surprising, as the smaller and lighter Kona is only rated at 300 WLTP. If this advantage holds up in EPA rating, the Niro might manage 260 miles EPA, which would really move it to the head of the class. If only it were AWD, sales would skyrocket in the U.S., assuming they can make enough and keep the price competitive with the Bolt.

Kia chasing dinero using Robert De Niro to sell e-Niro
Kia is going full meme
https://www.autoblog.com/2018/10/02/kia-e-niro-robert-de-niro-ev/

. . . the announcement at the Paris Motor Show that De Niro will lead a new advertising campaign for the Niro crossover.

The new campaign was introduced in tandem with the European debut of the all-electric version of the Kia Niro. Likewise, the De Niro campaign will strictly be used for the European market. It will include not only TV spots, but digital and print advertising, as well. In a culture that is so dependent on social media that is fueled by memes, the Niro connection seems like a no-brainer. . . .

Very positive video review of the Niro BEV, from AutoGefuhl: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=za7oxUuPgik

While I still have to drive one and see if I can lie down stretched out in the back, I have a pretty favorable opinion and, depending on the price, I'd seriously consider it even though it lacks the AWD I really want. Ideally, I'd want the Bolt's driving controls and dynamics with the Niro's size - see the Edmunds' video comparo of the Kona and Bolt: https://insideevs.com/edmunds-hyundai-kona-electric-vs-chevy-bolt/

I've got some income coming in next year that I'll want to reduce taxes on, so maybe I'll change my usual habit of buying a car for its lifetime and opt for one of these (or else lease) for a few years, while the ZEV I really want (more range/faster QC/AWD/lower price) becomes practical. I could live with having to put chains on unnecessarily again for a few years if had to, if it meant I could take weekend trips ZEV. I still need the QC infrastructure to be built between here and Yosemite and along 395 to make it useful for me. If that gets built, the only other question is do I keep my Forester just for the multi-day road trips, or sell it and rent for those? As a single-person household having two cars seems silly, but depending on rental rates it may still make sense financially.

Looks nice, I like how it seems roomier in all aspects than the Leaf and even gives better ground clearance. I'm also impressed with the 64kw battery option, seems like a real nice vehicle :)

With GM announcing plant closures for a switch to autonomy and EVs, I may wait until the 2020s are announced, to see if they introduce a small (hopefully AWD) BCUV based on the Bolt platform, as they mentioned over a year back: https://electrek.co/2017/11/15/gm-electric-vehicles-crossover-minivan-corvette/

It won't qualify for as much tax credit, but if it's AWD, lower-priced and meets my range and other needs, I'd go for it.

Kia Niro EV Gets New, Lower Range Ratings In Europe
https://insideevs.com/kia-niro-ev-new-lower-range-ratings-europe/

. . . Autocar reports that an independent firm’s error caused an overstatement of the WLTP range of the Kia Niro EV.

After adjustments to account for the problems with the original testing, the Kia e-Niro (64-kWh battery pack) has a WLTP range of 282 miles. Previously, the rating was 301 miles. Kia has downgraded the same vehicle with its smaller 39.2-kWh pack as well. The initial 193-mile range is now set and 179 miles. . . .
EPA combined range was initially announced as 239 miles then pulled, and I don't know if that's official or not. The Kona was also re-rated under WLTP.

From JeffN's article posted over in the Kona topic, we get this piece of welcome news for we California skiers:
According to Kia, the North American version of the 2019 Niro EV will come standard with a heat pump to more efficiently assist with cabin heating and the dedicated battery heater will be an optional feature. In the 2020 Soul EV, both the heat pump and battery heater are listed as optional features.
I have no idea if the email I sent them asking for this had an effect, but I'm glad I took the time to send it!

Comprehensive review here, looks like an even better choice than it's Kona Electric cousin:

Bjorn took a Niro to a Ionity 350 kW charger. I have to say -- very nice looking charger !
Anyway, the car maxxed out at 68 kW when the SoC was 50% and the battery was warm enough.

If this car was AWD and would charge at 100kW or more, it would be a no-brainer for me to get one. As it is, lacking both of those I'm still seriously considering it. Have to see how the new Soul BEV turns out as well. I can always put a cloth cover on the seats.

... Very expensive Tesla model X :D
My sig on TMC has always read "Model S/X are too big and too expensive for me. Waiting for a small AWD CUV (lose the Falcon Wing doors - some of us need to carry kayaks!) on the Model 3 platform." Of course, the Model Y is looking like it will be too expensive as well, or at least it will be years before the price drops enough for me to consider, and it's really too big for my needs -I'd prefer at least 6" and preferably 10" shorter than the Model 3.

What Car? Names Kia Niro EV 2019 Car of the Year
https://insideevs.com/what-car-kia-e-niro-2019-car-year/

. . . he Kia e-Niro has won the What Car? 2019 Car of the Year award in the UK.

It’s the first time when an all-electric model won the overall title as well as the first win for Kia. Of course, the e-Niro won the Electric Car of the Year category as well.

The British magazine appreciates the range and affordability, which makes the e-Niro a very good value proposition. . . .

Not much new in the latest update, expected to start arriving in the end of Feb. I think the biggest surprise is how many states they are going for.
