Yeah, summer/winter makes a huge difference. I'm planning on installing an aftermarket auto-dimming mirror but I've forgotten all about now that is summer. I'm not going through another winter without one though.

No risk as long as you are familiar with panel tools. The shiny panel in the arm rest can be easily damaged if you aren't careful with your panel tools, other than that it's relatively easy swap, and easy to go back if you choose.
 
If it's the same part number they should be illuminated. They are identical in every way except for the light circuits inside , AFAICT.

Why Nissan went to the trouble of making a separate part to save $0.05 per car is beyond me....
