The Governor signed the capital budget on May 21 that included $1.5 million for shoreside charging infrastructure to support the new, electric Guemes Island Ferry.

Skagit County Ferry Division Manager, Rachel Rowe, and Public Works Director, Dan Berentson, made a presentation to the House Transportation Committee in January 2019 to raise awareness of the innovative work the county is doing to design and build an electric replacement ferry.

An all-electric ferry will eliminate consumption of 2 million gallons of diesel fuel over the 40-year life of the vessel and achieve near-zero local air emissions. The project aligns with the goals of the WA State Maritime Blue Strategy for a sustainable maritime industry by 2050.

The Italian city of Bolzano is the first customer to order Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen buses. (Earlier post.) Twelve Solaris hydrogen buses will follow the last year’s delivery of battery vehicles. The contract includes an 8 year-long service and maintenance package.

The vehicles will be equipped with a 60 kW fuel cell stack and Solaris High Power batteries. . . .

Complementing the driveline is an axle with integrated electric motors (2 x 125 kW). In order to reduce energy use to a maximum, the vehicle will feature a climate control system with a CO2 heat pump that allows to use waste heat from the fuel cell.

Hydrogen is stored in composite roof tanks; the bus will be capable of covering up to 350 km (217 miles) on a single refill.

Part of the contract is also a special drivers’ and workshop personnel’s training emphasizing the safety aspects of using and servicing hydrogen vehicles. . . .

The F12 is Geely’s first commercial vehicle which utilizes hydrogen fuel cell technology and after a 10-minute refueling can run more than 500 km (311 miles). The C11 battery-electric bus is made for a variety of operational scenarios such as city commuting, tourism, and public transportation. . . .

F12 fuel cell bus. The new hydrogen-powered F12 city bus was developed by GCV in response to China’s national new energy policy and as part of Geely’s continuing R&D into fuel cell technologies.

In real world operational tests, the F12 fuel cell bus had an energy consumption rate of 7.5 kg of hydrogen per 100 km. A full tank is enough for all-day operation. Through extreme environmental test such as extreme heat, cold, and high altitude, hydrogen fuel cell technology has been proven to be very adaptive.

In addition to its advantages of zero emissions and low energy consumption, the F12 also comes with attractive design, comfortable interior, and multiple smart functions. The model is available in both 12-meter and 10.5-meter versions. The F12 bus comes with real time remote monitoring, road condition warning, remote fault diagnostic, and other intelligent features to assist companies in scheduling and fleet management.

During the UITP Global Public Transport Summit, representatives of Solaris and Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens (RATP will sign a contract for lease and tests of the Urbino 12 hydrogen.

RATP, the operator responsible for public transport in Paris, will test the hydrogen bus for 10 weeks in the first half of 2020 in regular passenger traffic. . . .

German logistics service provider Pfenning Logistics will be using a Mercedes-Benz eActros battery-electric 25-tonne truck to supply the Mercedes-Benz Mannheim plant. . . .

Pfenning’s eActros is now an integral part of the Mercedes-Benz plant’s logistics chain. The electric truck will transport replacement parts and components from the external warehouse to the Mannheim plant. The eActros will operate in two shifts and cover around 160 kilometers a day. With a range of up to 200 kilometers, the eActros will be able to manage this workload reliably. The batteries will be recharged in the evening at the external warehouse after the truck has completed its tours. . . .

Two electric motors near the wheel hubs of the rear axle provide the drive, each delivering an output of 126 kW and 485 N·m maximum torque. Furthermore, the transmission ratio used sees this brought up to 11,000 Nm on each wheel. The drive power is therefore on par with a conventional truck. Lithium-ion batteries with 240 kWh capacity provide the eActros with the required energy. Depending on the available charging output, the batteries can be charged completely within as little as two hours (at 150 kW).

As part of practical testing of the eActros "Innovation Fleet", the 18 or 25-tonne vehicles are put through their paces by 20 customers from various sectors as part of their regular daily operations. The tests of this "Innovation Fleet" are made up of two phases, each with ten customers. Feedback from these practical tests flows directly into further development of the eActros for series production. The aim is to make clean and quiet distribution in urban areas possible with heavy-duty trucks from 2021 onward. SW/TCH Maritime funds the construction of hydrogen fuel cell e-ferry

SW/TCH Maritime (SW/TCH), an impact investment platform building the first fleet of zero-emissions maritime vessels in the US, announced its investment to construct and own the ‘Water Go Round’ e-ferry in collaboration with Golden Gate Zero Emission Marine (GGZEM), a provider of turn-key hydrogen fuel cell power systems for ships.

The 84-passenger e-ferry is currently under construction at the Bay Ship & Yacht shipyard in Alameda, CA using private funding from SW/TCH and a $3-million grant from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) through the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (Air District), the administrator of the grant.

The $3-million grant comes from California Climate Investments initiative. . . .

The San Francisco e-ferry will act as the flagship vessel for SW/TCH’s fleet. This comes on the heels of SW/TCH’s earlier announced plans to establish a fully electric ferry in New York City, which is now scheduled for deployment following the proof of concept of the ‘Water-Go-Round’ e-ferry. SW/TCH plans to work with existing ferry operators on both coasts to provide capital to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission modes of transit.

The e-ferries will use all-electric propulsion powered either by hydrogen fuel cells or batteries that are charged with shore power. Scaling this zero-emission technology will only be possible with significant investment in new fueling infrastructure, and SW/TCH is partnering with Clean Marine Energy (CME) to develop electric charging and hydrogen fueling infrastructure onshore.

Backed by the same founders, CME plans to make clean fueling infrastructure available in multiple ports in the US. . . .

Ballard Power Systems announced a purchase order from Wrightbus, a leading bus OEM and Ballard partner headquartered in Northern Ireland, for 15 FCveloCity-HD 85-kilowatt fuel cell modules to power buses for deployment in Aberdeen, Scotland under the Joint Initiative For Hydrogen Vehicles Across Europe (“JIVE”) funding program.The 15 two-deck, zero-emission StreetDeck fuel-cell-electric buses (FCEBs) are 10.9 meters (36 feet) long and can carry up to 64 passengers. These buses share the same chassis with a battery-electric version, but avoid the need for long battery recharging time, instead being refueled with hydrogen in less than 10 minutes.

All the Ballard modules in this order are expected to ship by end-2019 and the buses are expected to be deployed with First Aberdeen transit agency by end-2020. . . .

In addition to the 80 buses that Ballard has already announced it will power under the JIVE program, earlier generation Ballard fuel cell modules have been powering a fleet of 10 FCEBs for Aberdeen City Council over the past several years, already recording 1-million miles of revenue service.

The modules have demonstrated a high level of performance together with unsurpassed durability. With the deployment of more FCEBs, Aberdeen is reinforcing its reputation as a center of excellence for hydrogen and fuel cell technologies.

. . . The latest Lightning Electric powertrain for the Ford F-59 chassis is available for all F-59 variants, which range from 16,000 to 22,000-pound gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) configurations. The platform is offered in 80-mile and 110-mile range versions. The powertrain offers peak power of 180 kW (equivalent 241 horsepower), a torque rating of 1,071 N·m, (790 lb-ft), and a top speed of 65 mph (software limited).

The vehicle features a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery system from a volume-ready world-class battery supplier. It accommodates a full charge in about 2 hours (80-mile range) or 2.5 hours (110-mile range) with Lightning’s DC fast charging option (using standard CCS-Combo charging).

The Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP) was formed by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to respond to a key market challenge by making clean trucks and buses more affordable for fleets. By offering point-of-sale incentives for clean trucks and buses, HVIP provides a streamlined approach for providing helpful incentives to fleets without waiting to submit proposals or complicated paperwork. Fleets receive the voucher discount at the point of sale while HVIP-approved vendors and dealers process the required documentation. Eligible California customers can receive up to $100,000 in HVIP voucher amounts to go towards the price of the F-59. . . .

The Urbino 12 hydrogen model fuel cell electric bus (FCEB)—capable of traveling 350 kilometers on a single hydrogen refueling—was unveiled by Solaris at the UITP Global Public Transport Summit 2019, held in June in Stockholm, Sweden. The bus incorporates an axle with two electric motors and is equipped with a climate control system utilizing heat generated by the fuel cell module.

The 12 FCmove-HD modules—a product that was launched by Ballard at the UITP Global Public Transport Summit 2019 in June—are expected to ship in 2020 and the buses are expected to be deployed with SAS Bolzano by 2021. . . .

Benefits of Ballard’s new FCmove-HD compared to the current generation heavy-duty fuel cell module include:


  • Expected 35% reduction in product lifecycle cost, achieved through lower maintenance requirements, higher reliability and 50% fewer parts.

    The fuel cell module is a completely integrated system designed with a new generation of more robust balance-of-plant components to improve reliability. Expected operating lifetime is greater than 30,000 hours.

    The smaller, more powerful fuel cell module enables greater flexibility in commercial vehicle design. Reducing the volume by 40% and weight by 35% has produced a compact, low-profile module that is ready to install in tight spaces.

    FCmove is tolerant to a wider range of operating conditions, including freeze start to -25 deg. C (-13 deg. F) without external energy. There is no need to plug in the vehicle or use special start procedures.

    The fuel cell module can operate at higher temperatures, thereby permitting a smaller cooling package for integration flexibility, and generates HVAC heating, significantly improving overall fuel economy and vehicle efficiency.

Dana Incorporated will provide its Spicer Electrified e-Propulsion solution with integrated TM4 SUMO HP motor-inverter system to power Class 8 tractor-trailer units that will move freight year-round between Edmonton and Calgary in Alberta, Canada.

The trucks are part of a three-year, $11.2-million (C$15-million) Alberta Zero-Emissions Truck Electrification Collaboration (AZETEC) project, which involves the design and manufacture of heavy-duty, extended-range, hydrogen fuel cell electric hybrid trucks. (Earlier post.)

Dana’s custom Spicer e-System is optimized for the Canadian market with a hauling capacity of 140,000 pounds, the highest-rated electrified drivetrain system for linehaul applications. The system’s compact design reduces weight and allows for more hydrogen fuel storage, while high-speed helical gearing provides greater overall efficiency. Dana’s TM4 SUMO HP motor-inverter system was specifically designed for high-power applications, and multi-speed gearboxes.

The trucks, developed for Alberta’s unique operating environment, will be 64-tonne (gross vehicle weight) B-train tractor-trailers capable of traveling up to 430 miles (700 km) between refueling. They will be operated by Alberta trucking companies Trimac Transportation and Bison Transport. At the conclusion of the project, the trucks will have carried approximately 12 million tonne-miles of freight. . . .

Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) is committing more than C$7.3 million to the AZETEC project. This investment comes from ERA’s BEST Challenge—a $100 million funding opportunity for biotechnology, electricity, and sustainable transportation technology solutions. ERA funds projects using the proceeds from carbon pricing paid by large final emitters to reduce GHGs and build the resilience of new and incumbent industries in Alberta.

Ports of Auckland first started looking for a battery-powered tug in 2016. This will be the first full-sized electric tug, and it is designed for normal port operations. There is an electric tug under construction for use in Turkey, but it is small (18.7m), is designed with a conventional twin screw propulsion line (as opposed to the Azimuth propulsion in the RSD-E 2513) and will work in a very narrow and tight environment.

The new tug is an electric version of the existing Damen RSD Tug 2513, which was unveiled in 2018 featuring green credentials, being fuel-efficient and IMO Tier III ready. This made an ideal candidate for conversion to the first full-size, fully electric port tug.

There are also high levels of redundancy built into its power systems. The batteries arranged in strings; if one battery in a string fails, the others carry on the work.

To ensure absolute safety, the tug also has two 1000 kW back-up generator sets. They provide enough power for the tug to operate at 40 tonnes bollard pull in the event of an electrical system failure or if the vessel needs to operate for a longer duration.

The generators are fully IMO Tier III compliant engines and therefore the greenest option currently available.

The back-up generators are intended to be used very rarely. The new e-tug can do up to four shipping moves on a charge of batteries and can go in for quick charge if required.

The current 70-tonne bollard pull tug Hauraki uses around 120 liters of diesel per hour. In 2019 it consumed 190,926 liters of diesel equating to 514.33 tCO2e (figures for 2019, using MFE May 2019 emission factors).

The energy capacity of the e-tug’s batteries is 2800 kWh—the same as 70 Nissan LEAFs (based on a 40kW LEAF battery). Based on the Hauraki 2019 diesel consumption / number of ship pulls it is expected the electric tug will use approximately 501,685 kWh to operate in the same way, this equates to 49.02 tCO2e which would mean an annual saving of 465.31 tCO2e.

In future, Ports of Auckland hope to be able to use 100% renewable energy, which would reduce emissions to zero. The tugs account for approximately 10% of the total scope 1 emissions and approximately 8% of total gross scope 1,2 & 3 emissions; replacing all tugs represents a significant reduction in carbon footprint.

Four sites in Socal. One of the sites (Carson) will also install a 958.5 kW solar array. As Anheuser-Busch also has a contract with Nikola, presumably these BEVs will be used for the shorter distribution runs, and Nikola FCEVs for the longer ones. The BYD tractors have 409 kWh packs, so obviously not suitable for longer trips. One year test/data collection, with CARB kicking in the funds for the data collection/management.
