I've been wondering why stations here haven't started to do this.

I know you will do most of your charging at home, but for road trips, and to keep themselves relevant, you would think this makes sense.

Have any service stations in the US done this?

Getting quite common in Canada. Petrocan. Canadian tire etc. More common back east but there are five under construction within 150 km of our house. All doubles. Think they are 100 KW but somebody mentioned they are upgradeable to 200 kw. Not sure on that. Heresay.

thanks

Here is a related article about just this.

Seems one sticking point is that CA wants to require card readers (makes sense) but the industry does not.

I can understand why they don't want a reader that's easily hacked / skimmed, but I agree with CA that the private networks can be a pain.

I don't want to be a member of 10 different charging networks, I just want to drive up, pay and charge.

Actually, I want to just drive up and charge. With CCS the car has a unique ID, so link that to my account. Probably can be done with Chademo as well. Can NOT be done with L2/L1, unless the spec is changed.

Fair enough.

How about you can still be a member, drive up and charge, but also non members can also drive up, pay and charge?

Can you imagine if you had to sign up to be a member of every gas station brand you have ever used? YUCK

So I'm going to agree with CA on this

Several gas station chains in the eastern US seem have agreements to host Tesla Superchargers. I've seen them at several WaWa's and, in Maine, Irving Oil Gas Stations

I was a fan of using the contact-less cards for payment, but got more interested in the in-car payment technology in the works:
https://www.ccv.eu/2019/the-future-of-payment-solutions-in-ev-charging/

https://tender-retail.acceo.com/blog/new-vehicles-are-being-equipped-with-in-car-payment-technology-2/

It would be great if all EVSE units were changed to communicate with the car and -- as you mentioned -- you just drive up, plug in, and start charging without the membership hassles.
