YOKOHAMA (Reuters) - Nissan Motor Co reported a 70% drop in quarterly profit on Tuesday and cut its full-year forecast to an 11-year low, hit by a strong yen and falling sales, and highlighting the turmoil at the Japanese automaker after the ouster of Carlos Ghosn...

Nissan Delivers Blow to Renault, Warns Dividend Is Undecided
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/nissan-delivers-blow-renault-warns-001132106.html
The French automaker stands to lose the most because it owns 43% of Nissan. The Yokohama-based manufacturer is conserving cash as it embarks on 12,500 job cuts globally, and cost reductions aren’t happening soon enough to blunt the impact of weaker demand, higher raw materials costs and unfavorable currency trends.
...
Nissan will contribute 233 million euros ($257 million) to Renault’s third-quarter earnings, lower than the 384 million-euro contribution a year ago, the French carmaker said in a statement Tuesday. Renault received 784 million euros in dividends from Nissan for 2018, the company has reported.
I still wonder if Ghosn weren't ousted, would Nissan be in (apparently) as bad shape as it is now? After all, he did a hell of a job in saving Nissan from near death in 1999 and turning it into a company making record profits + having margins (IIRC) supposedly 2nd only to Porsche.

With him being ousted, the Renault-Nissan alliance seemingly in turmoil and a lot of execs from the Ghosn era being pushed out + CEO changes... it all seems like a big distraction for Nissan and Renault management instead of being able to focus on products, the future and competitors.

Looks like a strategy shift away from the Leaf is coming.

Nissan’s New CEO Takes Over With Long List of Problems to Fix

Nissan U.S. closing for two days in January to save money
https://www.autoblog.com/2019/12/07/nissan-january-closure/
The automaker's U.S. arm informed employees this week that all of Nissan's domestic operations will be closed January 2 and 3, and no one will be paid for the additional holiday time off. Motor1 reported the news after receiving a tip and confirming the event with the car company.

A Nissan spokesman said the mini furlough is being done "To optimize business performance and competitiveness." The closure includes Infiniti, too. Dealers, as independent entities, will remain open. But the Nashville headquarters, plants in Canton, MS, Decherd and Smyrna, TN, the engineering center in Michigan and design studio in San Diego will all go dark. Hourly workers lose two days of pay, salaried workers take a 9.2% pay cut.

Stooopid. They act like they are restricted in the number of models they can present. What is the reason they cannot do both?

They think they can build something like a tesla and power it with a leaf battery.

NRE.

It costs money to prepare a model for market. More models, more cost, less profit.

With regard to Nissan's producing high-end BEVs, even if Nissan produced an exact M3 it would never sell at Tesla's present M3 volume.
The same would occur for Chevy or Ford. The M3 with a Tesla name is a unique/cool status product, being a BEV is secondary, and that
aspect is not easily duplicated.

I think only the e-Mach Mustang has a chance and it will need to up spec a bit between now and Launch.
Doubt the Mach-E has much of chance to reach Tesla numbers. Two major drawbacks I see are:
1. Autopilot, no frequent updates to eventual goal of FSD.
2. Dealer network, who will make things difficult. For example: mark up the price.

if this does not say something about the state of Nissan......

I don't imagine his next purchase is going to be an Infiniti.

"drastic" spending cuts? What they really need to do is maintain cash flow even it if means going into debt. This requires them to put out something that will sell. The EV arena is on the cusp of an explosion. When we consider many areas have yet to be touched especially in the under $50,000 price point, they have options.
