Carlos Ghosn, a year after arrest, still seeks trial date and access to evidence
Ghosn's lawyers have asked the court to dismiss all charges against him
https://www.autoblog.com/2019/11/19/carlos-ghosn-one-year-no-trial-date/
An earlier court ruling allowed prosecutors to hand back evidence to Nissan during pretrial wrangling over witnesses and evidence similar to the U. S. discovery process.

If prosecutors are "given the freedom to unilaterally delete the collected evidence and return it to relevant parties, this is equivalent to granting the investigative agencies the right to destroy evidence," showed the filing to the Tokyo District Court.

The lawyers also asked the court to rescind the earlier ruling, saying some evidence could be erased by Nissan to protect confidential business information.

They argued the "ruling deprives Mr. Ghosn of his right to receive a fair public trial by an impartial court," as it enabled prosecutors to view and use the evidence and withhold it from the defense.

Prosecutors are not required to hand over all evidence they or the police gather during investigations unless ordered by the court, unlike in the U.S. discovery process where prosecutors and defense lawyers disclose the evidence they intend to present in court.

The news of Ghosn possibly having fled to Lebanon was in another thread, but there's this tweet supposedly w/a statement from Ghosn.

The above Twitter user appears to work for Bloomberg.

I heard about the above either on the radio or TV earlier today but hadn't gotten around to digging for it. Someone else on TCF dug for me.

That is both weird and funny.

99.9% Conviction rate in Japan... Either they're phenomenally good at making valid arrests or justice for the innocent just isn't high on their list of priorities. I have no idea if he's guilty or innocent but if it's the latter then I can hardly blame him for skipping.

Great news! Statistics implied he had no chance and one news report said the trial could have lasted for years. The whole episode revealed Japan's legal system to the world.

I doubt that Japanese leadership will pull Nissan out of the hole.

The most widely circulated account of his escape – that he was carried out of his Tokyo residence in a wooden case for a musical instrument and spirited out of the country on a private jet from Kansai International airport in western Japan – has been challenged by Carole Ghosn.

She described the account as “fiction” on Wednesday, but declined to provide details of her husband’s exit.
That would be weird if he flew out of Kansai airport (near Osaka) while staying in Tokyo. Tokyo station to KIX is 531 km by car (almost 300 miles).

Haneda and Narita airports would be more logical w/Haneda being the closest. (I've flown in or out of all 3 of these airports and my most recent trip had me get on a bus from Osaka to Kansai airport, which is on a man-made sinking island.)

BEIRUT/TOKYO (Reuters) - Ousted Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn decided to flee Japan after learning that his trial had been delayed until April 2021 and also because he had not been allowed to speak to his wife, sources close to Ghosn said on Thursday.

The former auto executive has become an international fugitive after he revealed on Tuesday he had fled to Lebanon to escape what he called a "rigged" justice system.

Sources close to Ghosn said he learned at a recent court hearing that one of his two trials in Japan would be delayed until April 2021. No firm date has been set for either trial but at least one was widely expected to start in April 2020.

"They said they needed another whole year to prepare for it ... He was distressed about not being able to see or speak to his wife," one of the sources close to Ghosn said.
Remember he was arrested in Nov 2018 and kept getting "re-arrested". He was let out for a bit after paying bail then re-arrested before being let out again.

Carlos Ghosn Was a Superhero in Japan Before His Fall
The former Nissan CEO was celebrated from boardrooms to manga.

I didn't know that the hero worship supposedly faded in 2016, as the above piece mentions.
I'd know about Ghosn having received knighthood (https://www.theguardian.com/business/2006/oct/24/motoring.lifeandhealth1) but only recently learned about a blue ribbon from the emperor of Japan. I stumbled across https://www8.gsb.columbia.edu/paneuro/speakers/carlos-ghosn which lists a lot of other awards I wasn't aware of.

Carlos Ghosn 'caught bullet train' during escape from Japan
https://www.theguardian.com/business/2020/jan/06/carlos-ghosn-caught-bullet-train-during-escape-from-japan - if true, he had to be in disguise. He would be very recognizable in Japan due to his prominence and non-Asian people really stand out there.

I skipped towards the end and unfortunately, some the Q&A of it is in French and some in Arabic. Looks like there was some Portuguese at around 1:56:44. At ~2:14:10, he laughed when asked if he recommended a packing case as a means of travel.
