Dear LEAF community,

Due to rodent damage, I need to replace the battery harness that is immediately visible when the battery assembly is removed from the car. It runs alongside and under the main disconnect access panel.

This is a photo of the damaged harness:

I need to confirm the part number for his harness so I may procure its replacement. I believe the number is:

295G0-3NA0A

And it appears to be available here:

https://www.nissanpartsdeal.com/parts/nissan-harness-assy-ba~295g0-3na0a.html

And here:

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Your photo link doesn't work.

Thanks for letting me know! I think this one should work:

The number you've posted is unfortunately for part of the battery's internal wiring harness, not the car. Note that the listings say "Junction block & harness, 2011-12, #1, without cold weather pk." and "Included With Battery Assembly." Among the block items shown there are the battery's power and data ports, the contactor blocks, and the HV disconnect in the middle of the pack.. These are parts internal to the battery.

I'll look around, but if these cables aren't separate from the car's main harness, you may be SOL for a drop-in replacement. As long as the damage is limited to that area, repair should be possible (but not easy).

Understood, that makes sense based on all the connectors shown on that harness. I was able to get a dealer to tell me the PN this afternoon. They say it is 24014-3NA4A. The two suppliers I linked to earlier do list this part:

https://www.tascaparts.com/oem-parts/nissan-harness-assy-body-240143na4a
https://www.nissanpartsdeal.com/parts/nissan-harness-asmy-bo~24014-3na4a.html

I think this may be the correct part. It is above the battery tray/assembly and is fixed to the chassis tunnel. Do this look right to you?

That looks like the right one, but the prices are  . I could see it costing way, way less than $2k to just replace each damaged wire and patch up the existing harness manually.

No kidding, I was also taken aback by that cost. Maybe that cable carries real current to the inverter?

As long as the only cables damaged are the ones pictured, which lead all the way to the trunk, your inverter should be 'safe.' Motor power is only drawn from the battery through the heavily shielded giant cables that run from the front end of the pack to the motor (only about four feet).

Those wires lead to the on-board AC charger (OBC) (which, in the 2011/12 Leaf, is in the trunk), so they should only be carrying a maximum of 16 amps single- or two-phase AC at 120 or 240V. Nothing to scoff at, but nothing that's insanely dangerous provided you correctly replace the wires with the same gauge and insulation quality. The aluminum pipes leading back supply coolant to the OBC, as far as I know.

If any of the CAN wires in that damaged bundle are cut, you might have a hard time reconnecting them properly. The result would be a nonfunctional OBC and no L2/L1 charging - not the worst possibility. You didn't mention it in the post - does the car actually work? Are there error codes? Sure hope you have quick charge.

Excellent info, understood on all your points.

Yes, the car is currently totally functional and passes a shop diag, so I don't think the damaged cabling is (yet) electrically compromised. I need to personally take a close look at it an decide whether I can just repair it in place with some quality splicing and environmental rated heat shrink. That's definitely within my capabilities and would rather do that than drop $1600 on a harness!

Best regards,

Steve in NM

It might be good to spray some bitterant or rodent poison on the wiring once you've patched it up - good luck!

Indeed, my thinking exactly.

I live out in the boonies with rodents galore. I do need to do something to eliminate a repeat of this issue. Various rodent countermeasures, if you will. I did have a visible pack rat nest in the motor compartment at one point, but nothing got chewed on. If I don't drive this car at least every other day, it seems the critters want to shack up in it. I don't have a garage (yet), so it's a problem.

One of the funniest things that's happened to this car is when the coyotes chewed up the front facia and ripped up plastic that lines the wheel wells. They were clearly trying to get as some critter that had hidden somewhere in the car. Ended up as an insurance claim!
