Indeed there's been speculation in the media that Nissan will cut 20K jobs but Nissan corporate hasn't announced that yet. We'll see.

And, there's been this:
Renault could 'disappear' without government help, French finance minister warns
https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/renault-could-%E2%80%9Cdisappear%E2%80%9D-without-aid-warns-french-minister
https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/22/business/renault-france-bruno-le-maire/index.html

There seem to be some speculation this Nissan 20K jobs cut was going to come mainly from Europe. I expect the France will come up with a bailout for Renault but who knows. It sounds like product lines got very dated compared to the other car makers when they locked up Carlos.

Well there sounds like other old names are at risk as well. One downside for Nissan is all of the parked rentals that NIssan sold at cost that may be on the market soon.

Yep. Hertz (which also owns Dollar, Thrifty and Firefly) went BK.

Before they filed for BK, there was https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/hertz-chevy-corvette-camaro-fleet-bankruptcy-rumors/. So, yeah, if those brands have a bunch of Nissans, probably some will end up on the market. I've had a few Nissan rentals now that I think about it: '19 Altima, '18 Sentra and Versa sedan a few years back. In some cases, I had a choice of vehicles at pickup time and I intentionally chose a Nissan because I was curious.

I also wouldn't be surprised if other rental car companies reduce their fleet due to plummeting demand.

I can see how that may be the case. The brands that stay around to honor warranty claims should hold their resale value best I expect.

Where the impact of the 2020 pandemic will last 6 months or 60 months is a huge wild card. I'm reading 3-5x more will die than that will die from COVID-19 itself.

The world printing 25 trillion dollars of new cash trying to get beyond the 2020 pandemic plus the state of world peace results are just unknown today.

Free cash flow is always the bottom line for any car maker or non wealthy households.

TOKYO (AP) — Japanese automaker Nissan plans to close auto plants in Spain and Indonesia after sinking into the red for the first time in 11 years as the pandemic squashed global demand and disrupted production.

Yokohama-based Nissan’s chief executive, Makoto Uchida, said Thursday that its European production will be centered at its British plant in Sunderland.

The plant in Spain - isn't it where Nissan produce the e-NV200?
Yes, the Barcelona plant per https://www.nissan-global.com/EN/COMPANY/PROFILE/EN_ESTABLISHMENT/EUROPE/#region_navi. From news reports, it looks like that's the one being closed.

Hertz bankruptcy and a distressed rental car market means more pain for U.S. automakers
https://www.cnbc.com/2020/05/29/hertz-bankruptcy-distressed-rental-car-market-hurts-us-automakers.html
Detroit automakers, Nissan most impacted

Rental car sales are particularly important for the Detroit Big Three automakers and Nissan, according to a recent investor note from Credit Suisse’s Dan Levy, citing industry data from WardsAuto InfoBank, J.D. Power and others.

General Motors, Ford Motor and Fiat Chrysler collectively accounted for about 56%, or 975,000 vehicles, to rental car companies last year. Fiat Chrysler led their crosstown rivals at 21%, followed by Nissan (20%), GM (18%) and Ford (17%). South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor, including Kia Motors, and Toyota Motor each accounted for about 11% of sales to rental car companies.

Where’s The LEAF? Nissan Next Video Only Shows Ariya Among Future Electric Cars
https://insideevs.com/features/425969/nissan-next-video-ariya-may-kill-leaf/

I guess the Ariya is coming, after all.

There's also https://electrek.co/2020/05/28/nissan-will-add-only-one-new-ev-in-the-us-through-2023/ but I'm not a real fan of pointing to Electrek as they're a known Tesla-fanboy site.

I knew that the Ariya was en route, but the end of the Leaf is a surprise - not because I'd heard otherwise, but because I interpreted the lack of mention of the Leaf to be a lack of change... Time to get serious about getting an ePlus...

I wonder if there will now be an 'Ariya S' with 40kwh pack and just FWD.

I downloaded the zip file on the right side of https://global.nissannews.com/en/releases/200528-03-e and inside the "MTP Presentation – Speech Talking Points.pdf" it says
In July, we will reveal the production model of our EV crossover called Ariya, shown as a concept at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. The Ariya has cutting-edge styling inside and out, high-technology content including ProPILOT 2.0, a choice of powertrains, and much more. We expect the Ariya to play a key role as a brand driver and the face of Nissan for the new era.

"Choice of powertrains" sounds to me like a FWD version, although I suppose it could also mean a hybrid...but that makes no sense, as the Ariya was designed from scratch as an EV.

^^^
Hmmm... my interpretation is possible EV, PHEV and e-Power (non-plugin series hybrid) versions... Or, it could just be 2+different motor power output options, possibly dependent on battery pack sizes? As for which wheels are driven, I'd guess FWD first and maybe AWD as an option/later?

I do wonder if Leaf is going away or if it's folks speculating or reading too much into the video + presentation material or just clickbait, possibly even intentional from Nissan to generate buzz...

The Ariya was designed as AWD, with two motors. If the Leaf is being ended, then I'd expect to see what I suggested above: a FWD Base Ariya, possibly with a 40kwh option, as an entry-level Leaf replacement. If the price were low enough, that actually would eliminate most of the need for the Leaf.

40kWh is plenty for local and most regional trips, but unless you can convince people to specialize using multiple cars, I agree that it's probably not viable, at least in the U.S. Europe maybe.

^^^
You talking about 40 kWh batteries? 40 kWh Leaf has a motor rated at 110 kW (https://usa.nissannews.com/en-US/releases/release-77b5f147884a4439bd10c4d9207f2237-us-2018-nissan-leaf-press-kit).
