I don't feel like a 40 kW battery is very marketable anymore. 50-60 feels like the minimum (unless you are Mazda).

I think most will agree with you. While going from a dying 30 kWh good for 40-60 miles depending where driving on small roads or the interstate going 75 MPH to 100-160 mile range depending on speed was awesome when I hit 3 towns that is 80 miles before any side trips. When I did this a few weeks ago I got home with 15% SOC remaining when I prefer never to go below 30%.

I was reading in the Philippines the average one way commute was 7-8 miles so with few side trips a full charge could last all week. The people that drive 30-40 miles daily where the speed limit is 35-45 MPH in cities the 40 kWa may work fine. I have a few doctor appoints 90-125 miles away so I just grab the Subaru or F-150 if going over 50 miles from home.

In the USA anything short of 300 miles of range is like being on a short leash for many of us.

Well he is referring to single car or only EV ownership. 40kw will work for many even for some road trips. I have some fast chargers about ever 50 or so miles down some interstates that would let you go hundreds of miles with stops. You could go to Breckenridge here for example in fact many do take EVs up there. I think it would handle driving for more than half of people in the US even as most just don't go on that many road trips or that far away from fast chargers, talking to my neighbors I started to learn that. In my case I am on a leash in a plus mainly due to charging infrastructure problems like Great Sand Dunes is tight. Wyoming just sucks to drive an EV in so Yellowstone and Jackson hole and such is a pain. I can get to quite a bit in the Plus though without having to do RV outlets or waiting on l2. The solution I think for now is rental cars. One could buy a 40kw for 90% of their driving and rent for the occasional trip. I think some places even in the US many go a long time not driving more than a hundred miles in a day. For me to visit my father is about 68 miles one way then a return a plus can do that no charging stop needed.

Battery capacity is measured in kWh, not "kw". They are totally different metrics. See https://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=520169#p520169.

40 kWh Leaf has a motor rated at 110 kW.

Nissan out of the van business in North America. https://www.thedrive.com/news/33932/nissan-is-out-of-the-van-business-in-america

The vans were hot in my area. Many service companies went with Nissan vans. Tesla's 12 passenger van should do well based on lower net cost than commercial vans of today.

https://www.autoblog.com/2020/01/28/nissan-cuts-layoffs/

Keep in mind this article is dated info wise because it was written pre COVID-19 pandemic. Note the comments.

With the requirement to close 50% of Nissan dealerships hoping the better 50% will survive is not going to be cheap and will most likely piss off a lot of people in the USA. Nissan does not have a management team with and track record other than failing the mission of staying in business. Nissan may be taking the path that Peugeot took in the USA market 30 years ago. I do not see Japan with any real world chance in the the EV world going up against China, Korea, India, etc.

If Nissan had taking the EV battery development as serious as Tesla has for the past 15 years then there would not be anyone thinking Nissan will end in bankruptcy by 2025. I do think Nissan will figure out in the next few years what they need to do to get back on track business wise. The sad apart is when they get a plan to go forward there will be no money to implement that plan but the article goes into the financial risk factor.

If Carlos Ghosn was set up for a fall by the guys that have since crashed Nissan even pre corona virus I do not plan to purchase my 7th Nissan after having driven a Nissan product for 42 years at this point in time. The current leadership may want to fall on their swords now or after they liquidate the remains of NIssan. All 6 including our 2016 Leaf SL have been awesome vehicles. Two were running after 200K miles and two were fine when traded at 150K miles.

Companies without ethics at the top concerns me. After the Memphis regional office tried to find a way around replacing the 3.5 year/24K mile failed battery in the Leaf I started researching Nissan and learned about this mess with management. Nissan is not the company it was when I got my first one in 1973.

Glad this is moving forward. I just worry Nissan is going to lose another differentiation point with Tesla making more noise in the V2G space in the US. They need more relationships and need to move much faster.

In time V2G may have some impact outside of the USA.

Tesla talk of a China designed and built $20K Telsa for world export could be a risk to Nissan's success in China especially if built using Cybertruck technology.

$45K would be $38 after you factor fed rebate...that I looks cheap compared to the Y.

I would agree if the Nissan came with a real battery like Tesla ships with. Sadly it seems most Nissan dealerships have profiled the Leaf as a loser and it became a reality.

One can build and sell fine vehicles or internally fight turf wars but one can not do both at the same time is self evident.

I am hoping the Ayria is going to ship with the Renault version battery.

Unclear what the Federal tax credit status will be by the time Ariya comes out. Will it still be the full $7500 or will Nissan have hit phaseout period and be down to $3750 or lower? I don't have an accurate count of where Nissan is in its count towards 200K units in the US but if Ariya ships by end of 2021, I don't think Nissan will be at $1875 yet.

I wish success upon the Ariya, but I still plan to lease an ePlus SV when my lease ends next yer - or slightly sooner if there is a financial advantage to doing so. We don't need that much car, or that much price.

It looks like I was close in predicting that the Ariya would have a smaller battery and FWD as an option, creating an overlap with the Leaf. I wonder if the 40kwh pack will remain for the next gen Leaf S, or if the new 63kwh pack will be the smallest battery after this Generation Leaf retires.

Someone said liquid cooled. I don't have a link to prove that.
https://youtu.be/Fbo4-2tH3qk?t=1799 (Nissan's official video) at 29:59 mentions water cooled.

They trimmed the reveal and the old time indexes like I posted at https://www.chevybolt.org/threads/2020-leaf-worth-consideration.35738/page-2#post-549455 are no longer valid. Since I didn't watch it live, I don't know if they edited in/out anything else other than the portions before the actual reveal began.

Well, unless they just water-cooled the battery temperature sensor, anyway. ;) Thanks for the link to the actual moment they mention the battery - I hate watching these kinds of videos!
