https://www.cbsnews.com/video/floridian ... ses-surge/ in this 2 minute video featured an anti-masker (presumably in Arkansas) who said ” The government is here to protect our Constitution, not to protect our health.”

Another guy, presumably in Florida said “I’m not going to wear a mask to make somebody else feel comfortable.”

The Sunshine State has also seen a significant rise in hospitalizations due to the coronavirus. Earlier this month, the Agency for Health Care Administration reported that 54 hospitals in Florida have zero available beds in their intensive care units, while another 40 hospitals in the state reportedly have less than 10 percent bed availability in their ICUs.

Ten of the hospitals with no ICU beds available are located in Miami-Dade County, the state's current COVID-19 hotspot.

It's certainly possible to argue about the correct role of government. For me, I don't believe it's the role of government to protect me from the consequences of my own voluntary actions. I think it's the role of government to protect me from the harmful actions of others when I haven't agreed to be put at risk by them.

Which is to say, if I or any other competent adult chooses to risk our lives doing something that seems stupid to others, that's our call, but we don't get to choose to risk someone else's life while doing so, without their permission.

Mask regulations fall into the latter category, along with e.g. laws against DUI and reckless driving.

A friend of mine's a Sheriff's deputy who works out at the county jail, where they had an outbreak last month. Over the weekend a co-worker of his died from Covid and I texted him today to see if he knew him, and if he and his family were healthy. I last texted him while I was on Shasta, about the 14th or 15th. Here's his replies:

"I knew him. I have been sick. I tested positive for COVID. I am recovering. I will let you know when I am out of quarantine."

I asked him if he was staying in a hotel, and how his wife (who also works at the jail) and daughter were.

"(His daughter) is out of town with her cousins. She came to see us yesterday. Me and (his wife) sleep in separate rooms. I tested July 18. It took a week to get the result. July 26 the result was positive. At this time I have overcome all symptoms. (Wife's) test result has not come in yet."

I asked him what symptoms he had.

"At the worst, high temp about 102, head ache. Gripping pain across stomach and chest. Loss of taste and loss of breathe."

I wrote that sounded pretty miserable.

"Yes all of that. The full Monty. I have gotten over the symptoms. I have none now, other than feeling weak. To put the way I feel in context, a month ago I walked up Mission peak with a 40 lb pack. Now I get winded walking into the kitchen get something to eat."

I've read a few articles lately about lingering effects of the virus on people who have had it and recovered. Will those people fully recover or are they permanently compromised? There is still so much that is unknown.

There is also a lot of press lately about the effects of the virus on the heart, and it's not good.

Then there is the question of what happens in later life to young people who catch it now? I'm of the age where I'm susceptible to shingles since I'm that age and I had chicken pox as a kid. I got the vaccine just before the Covid thing hit so I should be protected there but the attitude that 'I'm young, this can't hurt me' is just foolish.

My friend continues to recover. He's got a family history of heart attacks (father, older brother), so I pointed him to the recent studies from Germany on the possibility of heart damage.

His wife's test came back positive yesterday. I haven't heard back from him yet how she's doing.

Herman Cain has died.

I didn't like his politics, but I had a fondness for the person.

A mask won't keep me from getting trumpvirus at all.
What will happen is my wife will get it because she works at a hospital and then I'll get it from her before she even suspects she has it.

He did neither. He had tweeted that masks weren't necessary at the rally -- tweets he deleted after he announced he was infected.
Cain, a stage 4 cancer survivor, tweeted a photograph of himself at Trump's rally showing him surrounded by other attendees, none of whom appeared to be wearing masks or other protective gear.

And he tweeted "Masks will not be mandatory for the event, which will be attended by President Trump. PEOPLE ARE FED UP!"

I think the tweet was deleted but https://web.archive.org/web/20200704023 ... HermanCain still has a copy.
