Florida sheriff bans deputies, visitors from wearing masks
Wow. That's spectacular, even for America. Even for Florida.

In a country as litigious as the USA, I'd expect that sheriff to be taken to court.
That's not that different from this garbage that was happening in Georgia.

I see that the sheriff has a semi-legitimate reason for the ban: visitors must be able to be readily identified. Especially with the anti-law-enforcement sentiment with the Black Lives Matter protests.

So: somewhat less spectacular than I first thought.

How QAnon rode the pandemic to new heights — and fueled the viral anti-mask phenomenon
https://www.cnbc.com/2020/08/14/how-qanon-fueled-the-viral-anti-mask-phenomenon.html

As I was nearing home on my bike ride yesterday evening (about a block away), I passed a group of maskless people clustered around a high end golf cart parked in someone's driveway. I'm pretty sure I heard one of them say "He wears a mask ALL THE TIME." The tone was amused and appalled. This is patently untrue, as I'm out in my yard a lot gardening and giving my cat a supervised outing, always with no mask. When a worldview can just nudge aside the observed world, it has become a pathology.

Easy enough to snap a picture at the entrance and then mask up, and your visitor badge then contains your picture. A photographic record is certainly superior to remembering faces as far as that reasoning goes.

UNC-Chapel Hill reverses plans for in-person classes after 130 students test positive for Covid-19
https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/17/us/coronavirus-college-university/index.html
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill abruptly decided it will no longer hold in-person classes on campus after about 130 students tested positive for Covid-19 in the first week since classes began.

In the past week, the Covid-19 positivity rate among students rose to 13.6% of the 954 students tested, and five employees also tested positive, according to the university's Covid-19 dashboard. As of Monday morning, 177 students were in isolation and 349 were in quarantine, both on and off campus.

"It’s just a week into the fall semester and the new cases of COVID-19 have begun to mount.

Sam Houston State University has confirmed nine new cases of the virus since classes began on Monday, bringing its total reported cases involving faculty, staff and students to 109."

Good going when opening schools in areas where infection is out of control!

Funny how on one even briefly considered the possibility of closing schools for the swine flu pandemic and that was the worst pediatric flu death rate for about 40 years.
I think a great compromise would be to move part of summer vacation to the peak of cold and flu season but the teachers union will strike if that's ever even seriously considered.

Here is some good news, well for me. 1% of counties contain 17% of the US population and are responsible for 90% of trumpvirus deaths.
I'm in the 6th least populace state. My whole state contains less than 1% of the US population. Then 80% of that population is crammed into 3 counties and that's where the trumpvirus is.
I say we just shut down those counties.
If I wanted city problems I would live in the city.

I'm sure that's what they were thinking up in Maine, where the number of cases has been minuscule, when they decided to have a wedding reception on August 7 with 65 people. Unfortunately, one person was infected but didn't know, and now lots of people are.

From a week ago:
https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/08/19/metro/covid-19-outbreak-linked-aug-7-wedding-reception-maine/
Now it's up to 53 cases:
https://www.boston.com/news/coronavirus/2020/08/23/more-covid-cases-linked-to-maine-wedding-reception-totaling-53-cases-so-far

Imagine realizing that your wedding reception cost the life of one of your guests.

The part of the "right" that we have to worry about is the part that thinks the pandemic is a hoax, and that Q Anon or however it's spelled is real. Last week there was an oddly untimely demonstration at the capital (Albany) against child sex trafficking, which I assume is at an all time low these days. Many people were holding signs with hashtags and urls that pointed to Q Anon sites. The local news was completely sucked in.

I'm hitting a paywall on the 1st story but https://www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2020/08/24/905494669/53-coronavirus-cases-reportedly-linked-to-maine-wedding-reception points to https://www.pressherald.com/2020/08/22/maine-cdc-reports-32-cases-of-coronavirus-one-death/ and has some numbers that add up to 55, not 53.

A woman who did not attend the reception died on Friday after contracting COVID-19 from a person who did attend the event, health authorities said.
...
Of the 53 cases linked to the reception on Saturday, 13 were secondary and 10 were tertiary,

Last night I encountered a little bit of anti-mask culture here. I was on the last leg of a late bike ride, and rode passed a kid shooting hoops in the near-dark. As I passed, he said, sarcastically: "Howdy, pardner." I've also figured out (from overheard conversations) that most if not all of the adults driving the now-numerous golf carts in this suburb are drunk. That explains why the ritual doesn't usually start until late afternoon, even though many of them are retired. My parents and their friends were high-functioning alcoholics, and I remember this sort of 'daily party' behavior from my childhood - sans golf carts, of course. I do remember driving a couple of my father's project cars around the yard, and up and down the street: a Triumph Spitfire MK4 (IIRC) and his Volvo PV544 dragster. So I'm coming to the conclusion that the pandemic isn't so much causing new behaviors as it is increasing problems like alcohol and drug abuse, which in turn are leading to at least some of the irrational behaviors we are seeing.
