A fairly high fraction of Coronavirus survivors have new heart problems.

^ interesting. And it will be interesting to see how all the young folks who get it now fare in the future. I just had my shingles vaccine since I had chicken pox as a kid. Sometimes problems take many years to develop and just because someone doesn't die immediately doesn't mean it's not a problem to get the virus.

Stanford Medical Faculty Lambaste Former Colleague and Trump Coronavirus Advisor Dr. Scott Atlas
https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/coronav ... s/2361236/
A group of 78 researchers and doctors from Stanford Medical School are calling out former colleague and White House coronavirus advisor Dr. Scott Atlas for spreading what they characterized as "falsehoods and misrepresentation of science."

Atlas, who has a background in radiology, was tapped last month as an advisor to President Donald Trump on the COVID-19 pandemic, which has already killed more than 191,000 people in the U.S. alone. Atlas joined the administration’s coronavirus taskforce in mid-August.

The radiologist and senior fellow at Stanford University’s conservative Hoover Institution has advocated against the use of masks and pushed the White House to adopt a controversial strategy, allowing young people to contract the coronavirus in hopes of achieving "herd immunity." Atlas, who doesn’t have any training or background in infectious diseases, has appeared on Fox News to push for reopening schools and questioned the efficacy of masks.

My region currently has the highest COVID 19 positivity rate in New York State - 1.7%. It doesn't surprise me much. It will be...interesting to see if people get in line as the pandemic worsens in the Fall, or if we have to go back into self-isolation and staying in the house and yard (bike rides excepted).

In the news recently, it was touted that CA's positive rate had gone down to about 4% (e.g. https://www.mercurynews.com/2020/09/08/ ... f-or-more/):
"while the seven-day positivity rate fell to 4% — half its peak — for the first time since late-May, according to data analyzed by this news organization.

The last time the positivity rate was that low, the state was averaging about 2,000 cases and 50,000 tests per day, compared to more than 112,000 tests per day over the past week..."

I just checked and my county has a 3.1% positivity rate (7 day average).

A quick Google search turned up https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/testing/ind ... states/usa. Seems like Florida has a pretty high test positivity rate of over 13%.

If I wanted city problems I would live in the city.
I'm sure that's what they were thinking up in Maine, where the number of cases has been minuscule, when they decided to have a wedding reception on August 7 with 65 people. Unfortunately, one person was infected but didn't know, and now lots of people are.

From a week ago:

Now it's up to 53 cases:

Imagine realizing that your wedding reception cost the life of one of your guests.

I donated blood about 10 days ago and was surprised to find that I'm positive for COVID antibodies. I sure didn't see that one coming although after stewing about it for a few days I think I'm actually relieved by the news. Be careful out there folks. I live in Boulder where you can't enter a store without a mask. There are a few 20-somethings (temporarily) in the household now and I have one friend in my pod who's a social butterfly but I really have no idea how I got this thing.

Remember that the current covid antibody tests have false positives. Unless you are in a population with a high number of past cases, the odds of an antibody false positive might be similar or even greater than a true positive.

My sister in law is a nursing professor and did the math already. She said there's about a 90% chance it's valid. Even more likely if I showed symptoms. I remember a day or two of what could have been symptoms but that was months ago and I don't trust my memory at this point. It seems like it would be a fairly big deal for the donation company since antibodies are being used for treatment if you can believe what you read these days. I figure they would use the best tests or maybe even do it twice but who knows.
