From a pointer on chevybolt.org, they have a pointer to https://www.hyundaikonaforum.com/threads/hyundai-kona-el-2020-ultimate-software-update.4166/#post-33353 as to what a recent update did to possibly mitigate fires or better detect something bad happening w/the HV battery/system.

Recently Recalled Hyundai Kona Electric Catches Fire In South Korea
https://insideevs.com/news/482199/recalled-hyundai-kona-electric-catches-fire/

There's some chatter about it at https://www.chevybolt.org/threads/kona-ev-fire-in-korea.37268/. Wesley in that thread is a Bolt driver in South Korea and delivers some perspective of what's going on there.

This one is getting some wider coverage. Still has a ways to go to catch the number of Tesla fires, but there are not as many on the road either. At least it's not as dramatic as the one that blew the roof off the garage in Canada.

Kona owner picked up 12/20 and won't charge this morning. Well... at least it made it more than a month. I suggested 12 volt battery reset. That does seem to fix ¾ of EV issues. My odds are good.

They removed some of the excessive "styling" features from that Fugly nose, but not enough of them. The charge port door needs to be symmetrical, and dead center in the nose, for one thing.

Yeah I can't disagree with the charge port. Odd. NISSAN got that right.

Looking forward to seeing the Ioniq 5 or whatever Hyundai is calling it.

The sad part is that w/Ariya, Nissan moved away from the center nose inlet.

As a Bolt owner for a bit over 2 years now, I can safely say the left front fender is an inferior position. I gave examples as to why at https://mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=548833#p548833 and https://mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=548912#p548912.

+1
Off-center just looks weird, like the nose changes otherwise.
On paper my daughter really likes the Ionic PHEV, unfortunately it sounds like we'd have to drive to CA or maybe CO to get it, as my backward state still hasn't got with the times. I wouldn't mind CO but CA seems a bit far but she'd prefer CA as she's never been there before. Hopefully, we'll be able to see one in person at my state's upcoming auto show, which will be later than normal as to be able to have it outside for social distancing and such.

Yeah so why is that? Or is this some sort of secretive CCS limitation?

He gave links. Here is what one of them says:

I'm annoyed by the Bolt's driver's side charging inlet vs. the center of the nose on the Leaf. If I park in our spaces for ChargePoint at work, if I want the cable to be in a where it can easily reach w/o going over my hood and contacting its paint or trying to route it under the car, I need to pick certain parking spaces, which might not be available earlier in the day. Or, if I back in to avoid hood and cable contact, it's a long stretch for the cable and I still may need to be selective as to where I park.

For a cluster of 4 spaces surrounding a dual handle station (below), I can really only park nose in for 2 of the spots to avoid paint contact or funny cable routing (possibly under the bumper). For the other two, I need to back in.

Also, for some spaces, a handle may reach fine to the Leaf's nose from far away but won't reach a Bolt because the inlet's on the wrong side of the car.

I may post a few pics/diagrams of what I'm talking about later.

We have https://www.chargepoint.com/products/commercial/ct4000/ with their spring-loaded cable management. The contacting the paint issue might not happen if they didn't have cable management (spring loading and attachment at the top) and just let the cables lay wherever like their old CT2000 series stuff (at the bottom of https://www.chargepoint.com/products/guides/). We had the CT2000 stuff in another building, but that's all been turned over to another company while we don't occupy that building.

For typical US charging arrangements, the inlet in the center of the nose is really best. I used to feel that way and this has been further reinforced now that I have a car where it's not in the center.

GCR:
Hyundai will replace Kona Electric battery packs, in most expensive EV recall ever

https://www.greencarreports.com/new...ectric-battery-packs-most-expensive-ev-recall

Hyundai is recalling approximately 82,000 electric vehicles globally to replace a faulty battery pack.

The recall will include 75,680 Hyundai Kona Electric models, as well as 5,715 Hyundai Ioniq Electric models and 305 city buses are being recalled, according to Yonhap (via Korea Herald), one of the first local sources to break the news.

The recall effort is expected to cost $900 million, which will make it the most expensive electric car recall ever.

All of these vehicles use battery cells produced by LG Chem, and Hyundai is reportedly in talks to split the cost of the recall with its battery division, LG Energy Solution. . . .

I briefly test drove a Kona EV today. I wanted to try to two possible Bolt alternatives if I decide to try to pursue buyback for my Bolt (wasn't under recall until 8/20/021 (https://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/home.detail.html/content/Pages/news/us/en/2021/aug/0820-bolt.html)).

I was surprised that per sales droid, they do not offer a 360 degree camera (Around View Monitor in Nissan parlance) at all on Kona EV on any trim. Also, the LCD for infotainment system on the middle trim (SEL) I tried is way smaller than on my Bolt. CarPlay looks kinda funny vs. my Bolt.

Car felt pretty solid and drivetrain seemed quieter than my Bolt (which is on the noisier side for an EV). Do like that they have a 1% increment SoC display (on the infotainment system). Bolt doesn't have one. Want 1% increment display? Gotta use the My Chevrolet app to see it.

Oddly, when going thru https://www.hyundaiusa.com/us/en/vehicles/kona-electric and comparing the two trim levels, if you go with the base SEL w/8-inch touchscreen, you get Wireless CarPlay and Wireless Android Auto. But, if you go for the higher Limited w/10.25" screen, you can't get wireless of either. It's wired for both.

If I were to go for this car, I'm on the fence about leasing vs. buying.

As I wrote at https://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=609177#p609177, if GM gave me a good buyback offer on my Bolt, I'm leaning more towards Kona EV now.

On the fence about purchase vs. lease though for this car though. I am annoyed by having feature loss of no 360 degree cameras. It's a feature I loved on Leaf and like on Bolt ('17 to '19 Bolt's Surround Vision picture quality is crappy and has fewer features than Nissan's implementation).

'22 Kona Electric also got a price drop: https://insideevs.com/news/528893/2022-hyundai-kona-electric-price/. This coupled w/$7500 Federal tax credit and $1500 CA https://cleanfuelreward.com/ makes it more interesting to me from the purchase POV...

Kona EV did very well in Edmunds's range test: https://www.edmunds.com/car-news/electric-car-range-and-consumption-epa-vs-edmunds.html.

It looks like the inventory situation regarding Kona EVs here in Nor Cal isn't looking good.

A guy at work who I don't really know but have communicated w/a bunch on Slack due to us being both EV drivers for years (and he sometimes spots me in the local Safeway parking lot) said to me a few days ago that he tried to go to test drive a Kona EV and the local Hyundai dealer (same as the one I went do and took a test drive awhile back) and they wouldn't let him. They said they're getting 2 in the next 90 days and both are sold.

I'd imagine the dealer doesn't want to take the risk of an accident/damage and has much more demand than supply anyway.

The local dealer on their web site lists a whopping 1 Kona EV as in stock (the higher Limited trim) and is openly marking it up on their site for $2K above MSRP. So, due to a small # of options (e.g. carpeted floor mats, wheel locks, etc.) and destination charge, they want $46,020 for it. Really?

A quick search at https://www.hyundaiusa.com/us/en/inventory-search/vehicles-list?model=Kona%20Ev&year=2022 for my zip code shows a whopping 4 Kona EVs within 250 miles, if that page is accurate. Unfortunately, all of them are the more expensive limited trim with an MSRP of $44K! This is a lot worse than maybe a month or so ago.

If I change it to 250 miles of a So Cal zip code like 90024, 29 hits come up. However, most are also the more expensive Limited trim instead of the base SEL.

Sigh...

I'd be willing to fly to So Cal to drive back an SEL if I knew of a reputable dealer. Of course, I'd need to have buyback numbers come back from GM on my Bolt first and be closer to having that process complete first.

A Fresno zip code (93625) shows (7) SELs within 250 miles. Perhaps worth considering...
I thought you'd written San Diego earlier (was looking at this post on my phone). All the Kona EV SEL that come up from that are in So Cal which is still a possibility for me if I can't get one here in Nor Cal but I'd still need an honest dealer down there.

I also noticed that CA's Clean Fuel Reward per the bottom of https://cleanfuelreward.com says "*The $1,500 maximum reward amount is for vehicle sales completed by 11/1/21; beginning 11/2/21 the maximum reward will be $750".

If it’s any consolation there are virtually no EV’s for sale in BC now other than Mustang Mach E’. A few Konas sand the odd leaf. It’s pretty much a Tesla only market now other than the Mach E’s.

Was on the phone w/a sales creature at a Hyundai/Kia dealer asking about Niro EV. I mentioned the Kona EV as a car I'm also considering since I'm almost certainly going to accept the buyback offer I got from GM (finally) on 1/7/22.

I don't remember his exact words but it didn't sound like they would be getting any more or wouldn't know when they'd receive any more Kona EVs due to the Ioniq 5, since that began shipping.

Sure enough, I checked https://www.hyundaiusa.com/us/en/inventory-search/vehicles-list?model=Kona%20Ev&year=2022 within 250 miles of my Nor Cal zip code and I see a whopping 1 in transit to Chico, CA that should've arrived yesterday. If I try a So Cal zip code (e.g. 90210), there are only 4.

Yeah, it seems like they haven't gotten any more in since they released the 22s. I think there were about 300 a few months ago, now there's 38 in the whole US.
