So I entered the 30kWh battery lottery today. :mrgreen:

I just bought a 26k mile 2017 S with 6 bars SOH. It hasn't had the BMS firmware update yet

Sounds like a good gamble, but I'm surprised you did not spend an hour charging to get a fair estimate of SOH

The seller was a little uptight about the car IMHO. Sat in the passenger seat while I took it for a test drive and we barely got out of the neighborhood so no real chance to do a range test.

But on the drive home, the SOC dropped very quickly, about 1.5x what I would expect on my car so that jives with the 60-70 mile range. But then when it got down to about 20% SOC it seemed to 'level out' a bit but at that point I was just doing errands around town so it was harder to gauge.

I have an appointment to get the firmware update done on 11/4 so I'll update then.

Back on topic. The dealership finally came back with an ETA! It'll be another month, because the warranty replacement batteries (~400 of them) are ALL coming in from a factory in Japan!! I hope they didn't deliberately build new 30kwh packs just to satisfy these warranty claims! It'll mean they've met their warranty obligations, but also that I've missed out on the battery lottery. Oh well, can only keep my fingers crossed.

ARGHHHH!! They're still not built yet! ETA has been pushed out until December!

I got my BMS firmware updated today. The specs before/after as follows:

SOH% 48.48 -> 75.70
Hx% 48.66 -> 48.66
SOC% 26.6 -> 42.5
cell delta 16mV -> 12mV
Ahr 38.53 -> 60.17
total pack voltage 357.92V -> 358.08V

I don't think the car was charged during service and the difference in SOC is just due to the firmware update. It was really weird before as it dropped very quickly down to 25% ish SOC and then was flat or went up for a period of time. Eg, I would get 35 miles from 100% SOC to 30% and then go 30 miles from 30% SOC to 25% SOC, or something to that effect. Then when the dash said it was at 11% SOC LSP would say it was actually at 5% SOC.

I'm going to let it settle down for a few weeks to see what happens. I might have to go with plan B which is to just sell it as-is and try to re-coup my costs. I'm hoping that with the new used EV tax credits coming up in 2023 I will have no trouble getting my money back but time will tell. The other option is to try to get 2 more bars to drop before 2025 but that would mean selling my current Leaf and keeping this one. I don't really want to do that but if it gets close to 9 bars soon I might go down that path.

@goldbrick You are likely aware of this, but if not...

https://insideevs.com/news/326563/battery-capacity-loss-warranty-chart-for-2016-30-kwh-nissan-leaf/

BAR LOSS CAPACITY
1 85.00%
2 78.75%
3 72.50%
4 66.25%

thanks for the info. I wasn't sure of the exact numbers so that helps. I'm going to decide later this year what to do with it. If it gets close to losing the third bar soon I'll probably keep it. Otherwise, I'll probably just flip it and hope to recoup my costs.

NOPE! I'd give it another week before calling the service manager again. 5 months of waiting so far!

https://www.facebook.com/groups/LEAFs/posts/5643845769038081/ currently shows what the guy say is a '17 at a Toyota dealer. Assuming it's fully booted, it is showing 4 capacity bars. I'm guessing it never had PC630 / NTB18-039 applied.

I like how they started competing to see who had the lowest SOH bars remaining (I think the 3-bar & 1-bar posts were photoshopped)! Good god, at 4-bars remaining, why bother nursing it along? Even a 24kwh battery swap would make it infinitely more usable than 4-bars!

Hi everyone.

My 2017 30kwh battery has lost 3 health bars already and is showing a SOH of 67.14% (BCM upgrade applied), so I expect to lose the 4th bar soon and be eligible for warranty repair/replace. What has been your experiences on dealing with Nissan for battery warranty? Has anyone experienced a cell replacement, or is the majority of warranty for this battery an entire battery upgrade/replacement? I've read several mentions of delays in getting a new battery, which is fine with me.. as long as I eventually get it.

FYI, I bought my 2017 brand new in 2017 and moved from Colorado to Florida around 8/2020. At that point I had all 12 battery bars. Since being in FL for 2 years I have lost 3 (almost 4) bars. The temperature impact seems pretty severe for these packs.

Based on things you'll see on the prior pages (as recent as page 229) in this thread, it'll be entirely dependent on availability of the pack.

Maybe (probably), but one cannot say from the data you have. The 1st bar is 16% of capacity, while the 2nd and 3rd bar are about 6.25% each. Since you do not know how much of the 1st bar was gone by the time you moved to Fl, conclusions are not possible.If you remember when the 1st bar dropped you will have a much better idea of how the different climates affected the pack.

I guess I need to start a new list for 30 kWh 4 bar losers since old list at https://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=525968#p525968 arguably isn't really valid now due to the firmware update to fix capacity reporting (https://insideevs.com/news/338528/update-nissan-has-software-fix-for-2016-17-leaf-30-kwh-battery-reporting-issues/ https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2018/MC-10143139-9999.pdf aka campaign PC630).

Here are links to the 30 kWh 4 bar losers I'm aware of post update.

Please chime if I'm missing any 30 kWh 4+ bar losers, made mistakes, double-counted someone, etc. I've included their initials or MNL user name to help avoid confusion or duplication. I'm probably missing some since I haven't been closely watching this and other 30 kWh threads.

I've been remiss on this. Did anyone ever continue with this?

If not, I guess I can, if I find time.

Update to johnlocke's case: "Sept 3, 2021 update. 272 GID's, SOH=74.94%, Hx=46.16%. 90240 total miles, 45311 miles on new battery" at https://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=609338#p609338. But that Leaf got totaled per https://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=610693#p610693 due to crash in late Sept 2021.

That list looks pretty good to me. Mine will be joining that list in '23. At first, I thought it would be summer/fall '23, but now looks like it might be spring/summer (sorry for formatting - too lazy to fix). Past winters the SOH has leveled out but this winter it appears that won't be the case. I'll have a better idea come January 1, 2023 after more miles/charges.

Date 12/1/2022 12/10/2022

Just heard from the dealer that they have over 500 batteries on back order and no idea where I fall."

My Feb 2020 replacement 40 kWh battery after 18K new miles 43K total on car now SOH is down to 94.38%. I was off the road for 18 months in the rebuild process after it got totaled Nov 2020. It got its first DC fast charge this past Monday as a test since the impact removed its door when the nose got deformed.

The financial future was a concern to me in Jan 2020 then they got a lot of funding during the pandemic but I do not see/hear good things today. In my region most Leaf dealerships had negative EV experiences and dropped Leaf support.

I hope we hear about more getting their batteries replaced soon.

At the current rate of SOH decline it should be years before the range is down to 60 miles as it was when I bought in in Oct 2019.

Just took my place in the line for a replacement battery. 2016 SV purchased when it came off lease in 9/2019 with 27k miles and 12 bars. The original battery had been replaced at 17k miles in May of 2018. According to Leafspy, it looked like they did mostly level 3 charging. We only use level 2. Here we are three years later at 76k miles with only 8 bars. Just picked it up from the dealership after getting the diagnosis completed for the exchange. Wait time is expected to be 6-8 months. Service writer said he just completed one that he had written up in June. going to be a long winter....

I'm glad that you are in line for your new battery. It is good to hear The battery that was approved in June just went out the door. That means Nissan is still working through the backlog. In Jan 2020 getting 40 kWh pack was fast.

Does anyone know currently how many new Leafs are being built in Tennessee?
