I am looking for some idea of how Nissan chooses who to deliver Leaf's to. I placed my original order on 5/2/2010, and confirmed my order in late last December with my dealer and Nissan. I was then given an approx. delivery date of 'April'. That has now been changed to August, but still no Vin#, etc.???
I see folks on here that ordered after me and have had 2 cars delivered already (good for them!) - but its not making sense to me. I am in Sacramento CA. and have had my charger approved, etc.
Is there a rhyme or reason regarding who gets cars???
Thanks in advance for any info you have!

Did you read the thread "Before you Post"? Because there are tons of posts about the delivery order or actually the lack of a fair delivery order.

I probably should just let LEAFfan's post stand, and have you do your homework, but to get you off on the right foot, no, you did not order on 5/2/2010; that is when you put $99 down as a refundable reservation fee. No one ordered before Aug 31, 2010. It sounds like you may have ordered nearly four months later than that. Do to a glitch in the process, some people who ordered in January 2011 got their cars early, but most people who have their cars ordered in the fall, and quite a few people with earlier order dates than yours are still waiting.

Yes, I was properly admonished, thank you. You will note in my post that I did say I completed my order in December, so I am not a complete dumbass

After doing some searching on the forum, I guess the bottom line is that Nissan has its head up its butt when it comes to actually using logic. I just read a piece online from San Jose, of a woman who placed her initial order ($99) in September, 4 months after me, confirmed her order with a dealer at her first opportunity, and took delivery weeks ago.

Bottom line - Nissan is doing a really poor job with this program and its frustrating as hell.

Thanks for your input.

I agree it is very frustrating to be sitting a state not authorized to order. I have followed this car from moment number one and am very excited about it. I decided to finally join the forum today and make this post after seeing a beautiful RED leaf for sale on ebay in city of Orange! He has already got a bid on it and it has 3 days to go! NOW IT IS GOING TO BE INTERESTING TO FOLLOW THAT CAR AND SEE WHAT IT FINALLY SELLS FOR. AS FAR AS I KNOW IT IS THE FIRST ONE FOR SALE I HAVE HEARD OF THAT WAS FOR DELIVERY TO SOME ONE AND THEY DID NOT TAKE IT SO IT IS BEING SOLD TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER. WHAT DO YOU FOLKS THINK ABOUT IT? DO YOU THINK IT WILL BRING A HIGH PRICE? IF I WAS IN A NEAR BY STATE I WOULD BID ON IT BUT NORTH CAROLINA IS JUST TOO FAR AWAY! :!:

No, but it seems like these cars went through a lot of processing to get them right.
I would have been OK to wait and have all the updates done on the assembly line.
Maybe it is an unfounded doubt, just saying. Time will tell.

The car on ebay would count as a "used" car, not a canceled order. Actually, there are quite a lot of "orphan" cars available from dealers with canceled orders. Most are going for near MSRP. I had contacted all the dealers in my area, gave them my phone and told them to call me if they had a canceled order. I've had several dealers call me back. I found the one that I bought on autotrader.com. Just be prepared for several hundred dollars in shipping (in addition to the $800 shipping from Japan) if you have to have it shipped - and of course you risk not having a dealer available to service it if you are not in a roll-out area.

No matter what anyone says, it's difficult to parcel out a limited number of cars in such demand. Everyone who has a solar system, it seems, thinks about buying a plug-in car.

After what we went through with other auto makers, I made sure to be on every "waiting list' and tried to gently encourage the process. It reminded me of the "EV1 specialists", who honestly tried to parcel out the EV1, but mainly had to struggle against GM "manglers" and against not having enough EV1. So the Nissan folks mean well, but fairness is unfortunately tempered by being persistent and consistent.

With the HondaEV, it took me weeks of negotiating with Honda Central to be allowed to lease one; with the RangerEV, it was intercession by a Ford bigwig that allowed the lease; don't even ask the permutations and humiliations of the EV1 leases! Not only on the phone or in-person for hours and days, but confiscations, intentionally defective batteries, and being required to be ready to snap up an opportunity in 4 hours - for a "waiting list" perhaps 2 years old.

Only Toyota honestly and without tricks sold the RAV4-EV for 6 months in 2002; and now Nissan is honestly selling a real EV.

This not the usual pattern for buying a car! Usually, they drag you into the showroom and dazzle you with chrome. So it's understandable that you might have assumed that just signing up put you on the right waiting list.

I don't think it's any fault on your part, nor even on Nissan's. Just remember that others had it even worse, with car makers who were not honest, as Nissan is.

But let's not kid ourselves; Nissan's initial "reservation" system morphed into a semi-solid "waiting list" and then another list; and then after over-subscription, it was closed for a while. Those not knowing of how tough it is to get an EV might not have followed all the permutations. If I were buying an Oil=Fired Vehicle, and put down a hundred bucks, I would CONFIDENTLY EXPECT about a thousand dealer calls and being pressured to take the OFV vehicle sooner than later.
