Nio Inc., the Chinese electric car company whose U.S. unit is run by former Cisco Systems innovation chief Padmasree Warrior, has filed to raise $1.8 billion in an initial public offering that will trade on the New York Stock Exchange.

Nio started selling a sports utility vehicle in China in December at a price tag of about $70,000, before incentives. That is about half what Tesla charges for its Model X in China. Nio doesn't plan to sell vehicles in the U.S. until after establishing itself in its home country. Sales of electric passenger cars in China rose by 72 percent to 578,000 last year, four times the number sold in the U.S.
