Another new EV announced. Range a bit short but for Asia and Europe it might be good, if the price is right.

The MX-30 features a 35.5 kWh battery and a powertrain capable of delivering 105 kW (142hp) of power and 264 Nm (192 lb-ft) of torque. Range is quoted as 130 miles (~210km) for the European model, which is likely using the WLTP testing standard. This means EPA range will likely be lower, around 110-120 miles.

The MX-30 will be capable of AC charging at up to 6.6kW, comparable to most EVs, and supports DC charging at up to 50kW with either the CHAdeMO or CCS standard.

Did anyone else catch besides the 35.5 kWh battery, this EV also has a Wankel engine :)
They said they are planning on a Wankel because of it's small footprint, I remember the engine of the RX-7 was quite a small displacement but gave plenty of HP.

They also put out mucho emissions and sucked gas, IIRC. Maybe the materials technology used to produce the sliding seals have finally caught up with what is needed for a clean, efficient rotary engine...

My understanding is that there will be pure EV models, as well as range extended hybrids with rotary engines, and even non-plug-in hybrids (? So you don't have to plug it in? Sheesh.)

I wonder if the PHEV would have that very large(for a PHEV) 35.5kWh battery? It would also be nice if the gas tank was larger than the ridiculously small tank of the BMW i3, and of course the iCE would have to be efficient and clean, although nowadays I doubt Mazda could export it many places if it wasn't clean burning :)
Wonder where they are driving in that video? they are speaking Spanish, show people in what I believe is Japan but the beautiful countryside doesn't look like Spain or Japan, more like Northern MN or Scandinavia.......

Another reference saying the Mazda is coming with a Chademo connection.
Yet at 8:26 or so (sorry I can't seem to program start and stop times into embedded youtube videos on this forum), they show a type 2 connector.

I'm guessing it will have CHAdeMO + J1772 in North America and Japan, and CHAdeMO + Type 2 elsewhere. Australian ZE1 40kWh Leafs are like that:

I enjoy his videos. Just down to earth, real world view on the cars, yet enthusiastic about the space.

I also appreciate videos of those that take the time to review and rate charging station locations! (even if primarily on the west coast)

Mazda MX-30 electric car production begins: Will it get the rotary range extender?
Still no news on plans for America

Meh. I'd like to see an EV Miata.

Would you be ok with it being a one seater, or with it having a range of 80 miles?

I don't see either as being necessary. Miata was a very lightweight car, even all-in with engine, transmission and fuel tank. People have been doing DIY Miata EV builds for many years even with Lead-acid packs. It's a popular donor vehicle. Modern batteries would make it compelling, I think, if Mazda would put as much art and earnestness into the design as they did with the original.

Mazda MX-30 EV is US-bound with rotary range extender, company confirms

Interesting!

I wonder why they gave it an "MX" model designation and not "CX." Mazda has usually reserved MX for sporty cars and CX for crossovers. CX-30 is already in use, but there's always CX-20. :D

2022 Mazda MX-30 EV to start at $33,470 in California this fall

https://www.greencarcongress.com/2021/08/20210824-mazda.html

The 2022 Mazda MX-30 EV—the first step toward the brand’s commitment to electrification—will initially launch in California dealerships this fall with a starting price of $33,470.

and will land with a big thud, because
The front-wheel drive 80.9 kW electric motor will deliver an output of 107 kW (143 horsepower) and a maximum torque of 271 nm (200 lb-ft). The MX-30 EV is equipped with a 35.5 kWh lithium-ion battery that supports an EPA-estimated range of 100 miles on a full charge. . . .

The 2022 Mazda MX-30 EV is expected to arrive in California dealerships this October.

Wow, 11 years after the 84 mile LEAF debuted, Mazda introduces a BEV for the same price with a whopping 16 miles of extra range! Be still, my heart ;) If you want to sell a 100 mile range BEV in the U.S. now, it better have a base MSRP under $20k before credits/rebates.
