Average Battery decline ?

I have a 2017 Leaf SV I picked up in November, it has 11 bars. Using Leaf Spy it shows the current SOH at 82.19 %. Just curious if that's bad, good or average for a vehicle of that age with just over 50,000kms on it. It had the BMS update done in 2018, according to Nissan's records. When I got it , the SOH was 82.64%, then went up to 82.75%, then 82.32 % and now 82.19%. Should I be concerned or am I over thinking this? The previous owner did have a cell replaced under warranty in 2019. Will the outside temperature affect the SOH?

Re: Average Battery decline ?

The SOH definitely fluctuates a bit, don't worry about that. It's a more useful stat for longer term trends. Personally, I only check the SOH once a year or so. It's important to realize that, as long as you don't abuse the battery pack with poor charging habits, the battery's health is what it is - there's no sense in worrying about it.

There are definitely 2017 LEAFs in Seattle that have 12 bars still, but those will almost certainly be dropping to 11 bars this year. Having an SOH of 86% is an outlier for a 2017, not the norm for most climates.

My Leaf is originally from Bellevue, Washington so similar climate to Vancouver. The person I purchased from said it dropped to 11 bars in August . So 82% isn’t to bad for SOH for the year and mileage , is that correct ? I only charge level 1 or level 2 and stay under 80% and only charged to 100% once since o have owned it .

Re: Average Battery decline ?

You are doing the right things by the sound of it. We are in an ideal climate for a LEAF, which definitely helps. However, if events like last summer (high 40s celsius) recur in future, then try not to charge during the hottest part of the day and do not charge to 100% ever when it's that hot out.

An 11 bar 2017 LEAF, that's resided in the PNW since new, isn't stellar and likely indicates the original owner could have done better managing charging. Hard to know for sure though, there's considerable pack quality variability.

The 30kwh packs are a different animal from both the earlier 24kwh batteries and the later 40kwh units. Many of them degrade quickly, but many of them also don't, especially in cooler climates. The fact that you have an actual, adjusted SOH in the eighties means that you have one of the better ones. The long battery warranty on the battery means that if you move to a Hot climate and it starts to shed bars more quickly, you will very likely get a new battery in a few years. As it is, you have a range that most 24kwh Leaf owners would love to have.

No doubt! Another 25% range would definitely be welcome. Having said that, a 40 kWh pack would be my sweet spot - that would get me to BC's Okanagan Valley on two charges (one in Hope, another in Merritt).

Re: Average Battery decline ?

As much as I love the warm weather (especially with all rain and grey skies we get here majority of the year) the 40+ celsius was to extreme and hopefully was an anomaly. I use mine for commuting around town and to get to and from work, my longest round trip is 90 kms for work. I went with the 30kwh battery for the extra range over a 24kwh. Hearing that having one that has had the adjustment done and the SOH is still in the eighties means I possibly have a better one is good to hear. I don't have any plans (unfortunately ) in the near future to move to hotter climate, so hopefully my battery stays decent living in the climate here. Of course getting a new 40kwh battery for free would be great :)

Re: Average Battery decline ?

Question regarding charging. I do have a level 2 charger at home, but would I be better charging at level 1 if I have the time to charge that way? Is level 1 charging easier on the battery than level 2 ? Or is it a wash since level 1 takes longer at a lower charge rate and level 2 is a higher charge rate but for a fair amount shorter charge time?

Re: Average Battery decline ?

L-1 can be better in the hottest weather and in the coldest (because it can help keep the battery warm), but for all other uses L-2 is as good as or better for the car.
