Climate control via Carwings won't start while unplugged

Tried it a few times and it fails. What gives? I found no Carwings checkbox to allow or disallow the car run the heat or AC while unplugged.

Is it simply not in the cards and Leaf can do it only while plugged in?

The only time when it shouldn't work is if the battery is below ~25% SOC. Otherwise it should work just fine. Note that it'll only run for 15 min off battery power or 2 hours from shore power.
