1st part of my trip should be easy:http://bit.ly/176QIC9 + Chico and Redding (sorry - Google can't handle more waypoints).
Rabobank Atascadero SuperChargers will be a little tricky, because I'm not sure if I can charge my Leaf there. :?

After that it's going to be pretty hard. I can only hope to find enough camps with a 110v outlet to get me all the way to Ashland, OR. Unfortunately I can only trickle charge, so Redding, CA to Ashland, OR will take a looooong time. :(

Does anyone have any tips? I'm leaving in an hour. :D
Just me and my dog Suzie.
Will post all updates on Twitter: https://twitter.com/NissanLeafTrips" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It's a bit late, quite late in fact, but what you needed to do was to borrow an upgraded EVSE from a local LEAFer plus some adapters so that you could charge at Level 2 at campsites. Other than that, Plugshare is your friend.

Nope. Tesla SuperChargers are NOT compatible with anything but the Tesla Model S. You will need to use the J1772s there.

Of course you can charge in Atascadero at the Tesla/Clipper Creek 70 amp EVSE with J1772.

Maybe this would help?

Drive medium speed. 35-40. 45 if you must to be legal.

If you get stuck at level 1, take a nap and charge enough to get to a level 2. If your next stop is a QC, only charge at level 2 to make it (with a safe margin). In either case, remember the charging slows down above 95%, in the case of level 2, lower for the QC, so move on when it hits that mark if you can.

If you can charge at level 2 you can possibly average about 18 MPH driving at 40 MPH and charging when you can. If you can always QC you could average close to 35 driving at 65 MPH, but that looks unlikely over that whole route.

I did some range charts here. I hope you log your time/distance/charging so we can check out the predictions.

Like a couple of days...

Try to pick up an EVSE upgrade en route.

You didn't say if you had a 3.6 or 6 kWh charger.

If you only have 3.6, and you can get a 16 Amp 240 V EVSE, you will also save some time time by taking the old 99 (I-5) route, bypassing 99 through Chico, which both is (probably) longer and requires higher speed driving, meaning much longer L2 time.

Trip reports on both routes here:

http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=3319&p=321560#p321560" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

...There are still no J1772s between Winters (or Woodland) and Redding (other than the obsolete tesla roadster charge site at Orland) but with My EVSE upgrade, the lack of L2 infrastructure is largely irrelevant...

Mark has now access to an SPX Power Xpress EVSE with a NEMA 14-50 plug. I advised him to ask RV sites if they had "50 amp service", since most of them likely won't know what it means to "plug in an electric car on 240V". I noticed that Tony had several RV sites listed upthread, which I would give strong consideration if I was driving along this route. Oh, and we counted eight temp bars on the dash gauge. Based on that readout, I advised Mark against charging to 100% on a QC.

Hi George.
Can't thank you enough. Probably saved my life (or at least two full days of charging).

Battery temp back to 6 bars. Didn't know about that. Thanks. :p
Also I finally found out what the "MODE" button does. :?

Now I have to find Best Buy or Target & get a charger for my ipad, because typing on this phone is horrible. :(

Sacramento is next, but thanks to you guys I can stay longer and actually see it. Yay!

Need to make it from Chico to Redding - another 80 miles. Not sure if it's possible. :(
Here is the elevation profile for that trip. It looks like it's less than 80 miles though? The 600 feet of elevation gain will cost you about 1.5 kWh of usable energy. How many miles per kWh do you average on this trip? If you can achieve 4.2 m/kWh (please reset the meter), I think you will be able to drive 80 miles. How much experience do you have driving the LEAF beyond the three dashes "---" indicated? There should be about 1.3 kWh of usable energy left at that point.

Happy to have helped with the SPX EVSE. It's good to have in onboard, even if you don't end up charging at RV parks. I bought it be able to drive through Big Sur. There was a stretch of 118 miles without a charging station between Carmel and Morro Bay. Plenty of elevation difference on that route. Needless to say that I was sweating bullets.

Redding --> Mt Shasta KOA camp: 63 miles, arrived with 15%, avg 3.7 mi/kwh. My speed was mostly around 45-50.

Charging to full (thanks George!). Next stop is Ashland, OR. It's 70+ miles... :?

Avg. energy eco was 5.6.
Congrats! That's very good energy economy for a new owner. It looks like you have reached the southernmost terminus of the West Coast Electric Highway. Should be a breeze from here on out. As an aside, here is the website I used to find RV sites with 50 amp service in California:

I hope you have a "West Coast Electric Highway" fob to use on all those fantastic AeroVironment DC chargers.

I recommend stopping at each one and only charging to the minimum amount to reach the next one. That should mitigate the Nissan-Hot-Battery-Syndrome(TM)!!

In other words, try and keep the SOC% as low as possible.
