I haven't charged away from home since my trip across the mountains in early January, so my wall numbers remain accurate. But the mild, dry March weather made my numbers something of a fluke. I hope that April will be colder and wetter since we need the snow and rain.

I would think it would be hard to estimate DCFC numbers unless the machine gives you a readout. But, as you know, I don't even have any public L2 stations here. As my range decreases with battery degradation I will have to adjust the route for my long trips or use plugs down in town to get back up the hill to my house. I am hopeful that I can get through one more Winter before that happens. Hence, my working on hypermiling and range stretching. Some L2 charge stations here and there sure would be nice; an hour at L2 would keep me able to make my long grocery shopping trips for many more years!

Here are my march numbers.

I had 60 kWh of DCQC in march from my Manzanita trip and some long days of running around town.

May mileage:

Wall-to-wheels: 4.41 miles/kWh

Dash: 4.9 miles/kWh

Charging efficiency was ~90%; my charging efficiency is higher than some get because I rarely charge to 100%, which is less efficient of course.

Notes: No preheating used, so charging efficiency can be calculated. Driving temperatures were mostly 40s, 50s, and 60s with some 70s. Battery temps of four bars at the beginning of the month and five bars later in the month. Elevation range: 8,000 feet to 5750 feet. All driving includes steep hills. No multi-lane highway driving at all. Some of the driving is on dirt roads.

My overall mileage over 10,334 miles is 3.86 miles/kWh, measured from the Wall.

For May '13 :

728 = Total Miles (from carwings)
160 = kWh used (from the wall)
4.5 = Miles / kWh (a/b from above)
5.3 = CarWings Miles / kWh
17 = $ spent on Electricity for the car
2.4 = Cents / Mile (f/a from above)

5.3 is the highest m/kWh I've got in 27 months of ownership. After the first week of May I changed over to MY13 Leaf. But I also changed my commute since I now work out of a different part of the town - the commute went up from 12 to 20 miles. Not sure what contributed to this sudden increase in m/kWh.

May 2013

Update on my reported m/kwh since the end of last year.

Interestingly, the apparent "gauge error" which seems to have increasingly inflated my dash and Carwings m/kWh numbers in previous years, seems to have largely (if not entirely?) stabilized this year.

I should also mention that since May 2013 I have begun using higher tire pressures, up to ~49 psi (except during range tests) as opposed to the ~43 psi for my first two years of LEAF ownership, which I believe may increase my efficiency by ~2% to ~3% overall, in my driving conditions.

Below are my CW monthly averages since delivery, from the “Regional Rankings” page.

While the month–to-month variations are largely explicable by variations in my driving patterns, the overall energy efficiency increase reported over time is not.

As you can see, my average increase in reported efficiency is probably pretty close to 20% year-over-year. In fact, while I drive to the same destinations as I did in 2011, I have altered my driving patterns significantly, but I’m sure all of you realize what it would take to produce an efficiency increase of this magnitude, which IMO, is far greater than can be explained by the changes in my driving patterns.

I believe this further reinforces my range test results, indicating a significant error in my LEAFs m/kWh reports, under-reporting my LEAF’s energy use by up to 10% over the Summer of 2012 as compared to my LEAFs energy use reports over the Summer of 2011, as reported at:

http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=9064" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In other words, I think it most likely that up to half of the efficiency increase reported below is actually due to “gauge error”.

June 2012 5.0 m/kWh
July 2012 5.0 m/kWh

And since then, CW reports have resumed, giving the following results::

Aug/2012 Platinum 1237 5.7 miles/kWh
Sep/2012 Platinum 1527 5.5 miles/kWh
Oct/2012 Platinum 1368 5.3 miles/kWh

Jun/2013 Platinum 1557 5.5 miles/kWh
Jul/2013 Platinum 928 5.9 miles/kWh (to date)

August mileage:

Wall-to-wheels: 4.47 miles/kWh

Dash: 5.1 miles/kWh

Charging efficiency was ~88%; my charging efficiency is a bit higher than some get because I don't charge to 100% very often.

Notes: No preheating used, so charging efficiency can be calculated. Driving temperatures were mostly 50s, 60s, 70s and some 80s. Some driving in rain lowered efficiency. Battery temps of five bars with occasional six bars. Elevation range: 8,000 feet to 5750 feet. All driving includes steep hills. No multi-lane highway driving at all. Some of the driving is on dirt roads.

What do you mean "from the wall"?

August was my first month with the Leaf. I averaged 4.5 per the dash reading. Not bad for a complete rookie.

there are conversion losses so the "from the wall" power usage will be higher.

generally speaking if using 240 volt, 16 amps you will be charging at about 87-90% efficiency (reports vary) if charging 240 volt, 12 amps (rare i know but i qualify!) it will be about 84-85% and if doing the standard 120 volt 12 amp, its going to be 75-76%

one reason (besides heat loss from conversion which is pretty small) is BMS over head. water pumps circulating water to cool inverter and whatnot is pretty static thru all charging rates so the longer it takes to charge, the greater the amount of power used to run the various BMS functions
