Anyone got the new iPhone 4s?
Could you confirm if it is possible to talk to Siri via Bluetooth and car speaker system (i.e. without having to use headphones).
Things like texting, dialing, e-mailing, etc.

According to this article, Siri works with bluetooth devices. So in theory, it should work in the LEAF without the headphones.

Another awesome feature of Siri is that it can also work with hands-free devices such as Bluetooth headsets!

oddly enough though, in Apple's own video for the iPhone4S, it shows someone using it WITH headphones in a Leaf!

I can confirm it does work. I havent figured out how to get Siris attention from the steerin wheel though. I still have to press the home button at the moment, and then talk to her through the car.

According to Apple, one should be able to press and hold the "Call" button on a BT device (BT headphones are mentioned specifically though):

http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/siri-faq.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Having to use iPhones Home button to start (or resume) a conversation completely defeats the purpose I believe.

So, if there is no really a workaround, is that something Nissan should address?

In the LEAF hitting the call button simply calls up the phone menu on the center console. They don't seem to pass it along to the phone. I would love to see Nissan address this. I've made mention of this and suggestions about it in another thread. I've also sent an email to Nissan EV Support about it. The more the merrier!

The problem, as has been noted in other threads, is that while you can trigger voice dial and so on from various Bluetooth handsets by pressing and holding the Bluetooth answer/hangup button, Nissan will treat a long-press as a command to pull the car's phone menu up instead of passing it on to the Bluetooth device as a long-press.

Nissan /really/ should make that an option, because long-press would be MUCH more useful to anyone with a smartphone, as it's got meaning to both iPhone and Android devices. Especially now that the iPhone has Siri...

Especially considering the Leaf's own voice-recognition is so... lacking.

I'd rather it just punt the button press and let the phone handle it. The phones get better every month, while "setup" "phone setup" is only useful once.

having a weird issue with iphone4s in the leaf...

even when the phone is not on mute, while connected to Leaf's bluetooth, i don't get any sounds from the phone, no email alert, no txt alert...the phone will still vibrate thou.

however, if i hold down the home button on the phone to activate SIRI, bluetooth connects with the car, i can speak the command to SIRI, or just cancel, as long as i don't end the "call" the car think i am still connect to the phone, and all the alert will be audible via car speaker.

i didn't have this problem before...only shortly after ios5 came out and / or iphone 4s upgrade...

the iphone 4s also works with audible alert as expected in my other car...

Siri works over Bluetooth in the LEAF; you just need to call it up by pressing and holding the home button on the handset (therefore, a flexible arm support that rests in the cup holder is ideal).

There is a slight delay between Siri appearing on the screen and hearing the chirp on the car's audio system, but it works fine.
