Mmmm graph porn. Outstanding analysis - I learned a few things!

How long do you think it'll take before the average Leaf owner can get that data any time they want? If the Leaf uses OBD-II for it then we're already half way there. I want a website where people can upload their EV's data for comparison and bragging rights :D

Glad to help!

The production cars and trucks from the 1990s have OBDII connectors. The factory scan tools allow full access to the data on the diagnostics buss. There are plenty of ways to pull that data, massage it, and splat it on a display.

[edit] The Leaf does have an OBDII port!

If Nissan publishes the info that flows along the data buss, we should be able to pull what we want almost immediately. If not, it'll take some time for the 'geeks' to identify the data. We'll get there!

The RAV4 folks have their Palm utility that provides real-time display and data logging:

Here's one example from the Ford Ranger EV arena:

This small single board computer pulls data from the OBDII port, can display it on an LCD panel in the dash, and relay it to a home computer via an 802.11 wireless link.

There's a nice Arduino package that gets us all the hardware we need for full datalogging that includes GPS data:

the funnier part was the look i got from some Nissan staff as I snuck under the dash to snap that pic at the drive event :)

One other bit of info that I'm at least using as a reference point is my real-world prius experience since my Leaf will be getting the exact same use. Not sure how relevant it is but I've seen approximately 10% mpg degradation over a 5 year period with all else being relatively constant. Have to believe this is battery efficiency loss over time.

Here's the data if anyone wants to look at it - don't think I've shared it here previously: http://barboni.org/prius.html

Emphasis mine.

And you know what? I really did know that after looking up info about ODBII readers for my current vehicle. Somehow I forgot just long enough to make that post. :| Thanks for the reminder, though.

Well at least I'm not the only one who keeps a spreadsheet!

My company has been doing OBDII (and other) datalogging on the Palm platform since 2001. I hope to release some products for the LEAF in the near future (not for the Palm though)

I wonder what (if any) data I might be able to easily get by using my ScanGuageII in the Leaf OBDII port?

I wonder the same thing. If I was thinking ahead, I would have brought it on the test drive. :)

My guess is not very much.. maybe the standard stuff -- speed, air temperature, mmmm.... what else?

All the good stuff is probably on proprietary CANBus messages anyway.
