CHAMBERSBURG, Oct. 4, 2011 -- If your car runs low on gas, you head to gas station, but what if your electric car is running low on battery power? Electric vehicle charging stations are coming to a few central Pennsylvania gas stations.

Sheetz is planning to install electric vehicle charging stations in five of its central Pennsylvania stores.

350Green, a San Diego-based developer of electric vehicle charging station networks, said the stations will be located at stores in Mechanicsburg, State College, Lancaster, York and Mifflintown.

It's not clear if Sheetz plans to offer the charging stations at other stores. A spokesperson for Sheetz did not return messages seeking comment.

The installation of the Sheetz chargers will be completed by the end of this year.

350Green said the charging stations will be the first direct-current fast chargers installed at service stations in the U.S. A 480-volt DC fast charger can charge a Nissan Leaf to 80 percent in about 25 minutes.

Electric cars are starting to hit the market, though availability is still limited.

The Chevy Volt arrived at Franklin County area dealers a few weeks ago. Reservations for the Nissan Leaf are expected to open up in Pennsylvania by the end of this year.

Electric vehicle charging stations are also limited in availability.

Mariana Gerzanych, CEO of 350Green, said expanding the charging infrastructure beyond homes and public garages through partnerships like this one makes electric vehicle ownership a realistic option for millions of people.

The company said placing chargers near where people live and work is critical to reducing the "range anxiety" that could otherwise slow the adoption of electric vehicles.

350Green has previously signed partnerships with Walgreens and Simon Property Group, the owner of the Hagerstown, Md., Premium Outlets. Walgreens announced plans to offer electric vehicle charging stations at about 800 locations across the country by the end of the year.

Despite the fact that Pennsylvania is quietly working on building out the charging infrastructure, Nissan classifies us a Tier 4 state. Now what would be really awesome is if the put quick chargers at the service plazas along the Turnpike! I think the state is looking into that and has solicited proposals from companies who are interested in building it out. So far all the public charging in this area is Coulumb Chargepoint; it will be interesting to see how that shakes out...

Subject: Electric Car Charging

Dear Mr. P71VIC,

As always, Sheetz wants to lead the way on the issues that matter to our customers and our employees. As part of our corporate sustainability initiative, we identified another opportunity to meet the needs of our customers. Electric Vehicles are new to the market and there is very little infrastructure. But in an effort to satisfy our customers’ interest in using alternative fuels, we are installing DC Fast Chargers for electric vehicles at five of our Pennsylvania locations. We plan to evaluate the level of use of these chargers and expand our charger program accordingly. These chargers should be installed at the following stores during the fall of 2012:

Store 193 – 24578 Route 35 North, Mifflintown, PA 17059-8933
Store 201 – 1415 South Market Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055-5675
Store 462 – 215 Arsenal Road, York, PA 17402
Store 475 – 120 South Ridge Plaza, State College, PA 16801
Store 478 – 891 East Main Street, Ephrata, PA 17522

Stores listed may be subject to change until field design is completed.

We anticipated a cost to the level 3 fast charging yet to be finnalized per ½ hour.

If these have the capability of L3, this means I could travel from Baltimore to York, Charge (L3), then head to hershey park for their L2 charger. IT will definately open more doors for EV'ers travling through the state (or visiting). Im interested in the update as well.

Thanks

UPDATE:

There are now five new listings on Plugshare describing L3 chargers at Sheetz which are supposed to be in operation by March 31, 2014. They are at some of the same sites that were in the original announcement, but some new sites as well:

Sheetz 498 in Blairsville
Sheetz 187 in Altoona
Sheetz 518 in Mechanicsburg
Sheetz 523 in Harrisburg
Sheetx 122 in State College

Not sure who's putting them in, since 350Green isn't around any more. Nissan?
