Well, garygTx met up with me this afternoon to see if he could help me confirm whether or not my ELM327 dongle is any good or not. As I had previously reported, my Kindle Fire HD kept giving me the message that I was using the wrong pin (tried the 6789 pin as suggested by garygid and that bombed out too). So garygTX tried to pair it up with his android phone and he got the same message, wrong pin, no matter what combination of numbers he tried. I also didn't see any option to pair it with an unsecured connection, so I'm not sure whether I can do that with this tablet or not.

Because of all this, I haven't given up on my Kindle Fire just yet. I think I'm going to return this ELM327 device back to Amazon and see if I can get a replacement that works. Many thanks to garygTx for the assistance today. Stay tuned for further developments...

Edit: Oh! And one more thing, garygTx had me plug his ELM327 into my car and he tested it to be sure my car worked properly. Nice thing was that I now know I have 89+% battery capacity in my car after 10 months of ownership of a 20 month old car and after one summer in the Texas heat. Good or bad, it's always good to know for sure. :)

Not sure if this is the problem but I do have auto-pairing in the app with a fixed passkey of "1234".

I will add an option in the setting screen to change that value and save it in the config file. There will also be a new "Toast" message dsiplayed if auto-pair code is executed.

This will be included in v0.09 which has not yet been released.

Comment on v8.
If you do not have GPS set On, and don't want to turn it On,
you are caught in a loop and cannot exit.

When v9 is ready, email it to me, and I will post the zip.
See app versions at http://www.wwwsite.com/leafbatt/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In v9 you might have an option to display GIDs and %GIDs
from the 5BC messages (when one is connected to the EV bus).
Or, just filter for them. If they exist, they occur twice per second.

Cheers, Gary

That's good because different devices could possibly have different pairing codes. However, in my case, we didn't even try to use the app yet with my ELM327, we're just trying to get the general bluetooth settings of the phone/tablet to see and pair up with the device first.

If your phone or tablet has other things paired,
one might have the same MAC address and be
masking your device, because it thinks that the
device is already "known".

So, unpair any not-needed devices.

Try the app without pairing, since the app attempts
to pair for you.

Ok, I'll give both of those a shot either later tonight or tomorrow.

Don't see a loop. I press Return to get back to my app without enabling GPS. Then select settings to disable GPS logging.

Did you try this sequence?

You should have tried to pair with HIS module since you knew for sure that it worked. Your problems are sounding more like a lot of the bad reviews on Amazon where people bought modules that they could never get to work. You might try seeing if the seller will respond to an email. You may just need the right pairing code.

Has anybody tried using the Kyocera eVent phone?

It appears to have WiFi, bluetooth (but does not list SSP), GPS...

I just bought one to try, but would appreciate any advice before
opening the box. Thanks

Yes, I tried that, but only turning On the GPS, then returning would
get out of the loop.

I just fired up the Kyocera eVent phone, accessed my WiFi,
used Google Play to download and install the ES File Manager,
and use the Browser to access my website and download the
zipped v8 Leaf Battery app there.

Then, I used ES File Manager to access the downloaded file
in the "downloads" folder, open the zipped file, and install
the v8 app there.

QUESTION: Turbo3, should I host the app file itself, as well
as the zipped version, for those who do not have the ability
to unzip files on their phone?

Then, I tried running the app, and it wants to connect to
some bluetooth device, so my next step is to go to the
car, try to pair with one of the ELM327 devices...
and run again. Then, try the GPS...

Gary,
Yes you can post the apk too. Just give me the link to add to post 1.

Version 0.09 changes (subject to change)
- 12 Volt battery voltage listed below Version number (done)
- Settings option to calibrate 12 volt battery voltage
- update 12 volt reading every few seconds (done)
- C/F selection for temp (done)
- Mac address displayed on settings screen (done)
- device name displayed on settings screen (this would normally be OBDII) (done)
- auto-pairing key user changable and saved in config file (done) default is "1234"
- screen message displayed if auto-pairing used (done)
- read Shunt status and display (done)
- support faster logging (done)
- new settings screen layout and colors (work in progress)
- at least one new screen, support for more (work in progress)
- Performance improvements (done)

Version 0.10 (this will be a major update)
- ability to switch ELM327 into listen mode which would allow:
**** Displaying gids if using a modified ELM327 connected to EV-CAN
**** Displaying regen vs hard braking ratio from CAR-CAN using unmodified ELM
**** Capturing and display any other data normally appearing on the CAN bus (there will be updated limitation due to there being only one filter/mask in the ELM327.

Beyond that there could be gauge screens like torque if monitoring the EV-CAN (RPM, amps, volts, +/-power). Looking for a good selection of background png image files of guages. I have test code for this but the example was a compass so the image is compass without the needle. I need gauge images without the needle.

I am sure others will add to the list of features they would like to see.

I need to go back and see under what conditions auto-pairing is used (if ever).

Jim

Thank you Jim for the listing of enhancements.

here are some gauges http://www.softwarefx.com/SFXNetProducts/cfxGauges/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Actually, we did try that too and it didn't pair, BUT, my KFHD didn't seem to see it as a different device, so I'm wondering if that's why it failed. I should have rebooted my KFHD to clear the previous failure, but I didn't think of that until later this afternoon. :(

I will extract the apk and post that as well, Saturday afternoon.
Same link and file name, just ".apk" instead of ".zip".
I will test it and post the results.

If you wish, you can just link to the website (no file name), and
my index Page there will have the links to the various versions.
You may try that now for the current v008 zip file.

Then, you can just leave a fixed link in your first post.

The Kyocera eVent phone worked well, pairing with one of
the "stubby" ELM327 type devices. Then, the app wanted me
to choose a device, and ZAP  it just started working, after
asking me to turn on the GPS, which was easy, since the app
causes the GPS Settings page to come up.

I used the Play Store to install the "GPS Test" app, and that
also seems to work nicely.

This phone is even described as a good phone.
Of course, you have to buy some minutes, but
there is a $10 card available.

Gary, thank you for being the guinea pig and testing that phone. That'll probably be my solution if I can't get the Kindle Fire to pair up with the ELM327.
