Re: 2013-2014 bar losers and capacity losses

I was surprised I didn't see much discussion about these swings or the effect of cold ambient temperature, because they'd be critical in evaluating a used car for someone in a cold climate. Battery temperatures didn't swing as wildly or seem to have as much of an effect.

I have Leaf Spy running on a spare phone almost all the time and logging to Dropbox. Although these are my max/min readings over a timeframe, none are really outliers from the surrounding data. It seems to take about 3 days for readings to stabilize after a big ambient temperature swing.

I've also seen GIDs at 100% charge swing accordingly from 259 to 284 over the same timeframe, although they seem to max out at 284 for any AHr reading above the high 65 range.

Based on the way the data is trending for my car, I may have a low enough AHr reading by mid summer to lose a bar after showing 103+ Hx at times in the winter! Perhaps if things continue I'll make and publish a trend of the data.

I try to leave my LEAF outside at night to cool off the battery. We moved to charging to 100% in the morning every weekday (just prior to departure) in the last year or so to make up for capacity loss.

So you do generally charge in your garage? I would think that Colorado would not see consistently high temps? But I guess that depends on your elevation

I do primarily charge and store in my garage during the day, and try to get it outside at night. The temperature difference between the high and low on any given day is pretty high- 30 degrees or so. Dry and 5,000 feet. There are really only a couple of months where you can see temps in the 90's fairly consistently. I've only seen my temperature bars get to 7 twice ever, and I'm usually able to get down to 5 bars overnight even in the worst months.

well have to guess you got an early 2013 because you lost your bar within a few thousand miles of when I would have lost mine...on my 2011. After 45,000 miles ahr was 57½ish. On my 2013 (build date 11/13) I had 60 ahr after 45,000 miles so was looking at losing first bar around 65-75,000 miles or so....

My 2013 Leaf SL still charges up to full bars, But the battery only holds 16kW! I'm wondering if they've reprogrammed the system so the bars just don't go away, because mine should be missing 4 bars. I know this because I also have a 2015 that I bought new, and I am very familiar with the way the 24kW battery performs. For example, from a near zero charge state, a full charge takes just under 16kW, which makes perfect sense because I get a little over 4 Mi/kW, so 4 X 16 = 62, which is very close to the actual range of the car.

So how do you get it warranteed if the capacity drops to half, but no bars are missing????!!!!???? I want to go more that 60 miles on a full charge!!

Anybody else experiencing this with the 2013? I've seen other leafs with bars lost, but I've never heard of dropping capacity with no bar loss!

John- 1015 Leaf LV bought new in January 2016 currently maintaining full capacity and range at 23,500 miles...(No Fast charger), and a
2013 Leaf SL with 30,500 miles and a capacity of 16kW, and 58-60 miles, and the Quick Charge system, with no bars missing.

I suggest you run LeafSpy on your car, and see what it says about State Of Health and capacity. Are you measuring by estimating from the wall?

I've been a lurker here but I figured I'd pop in to tell my battery warranty story. I have a 2013 leaf that I bought in June of 2016. The car spent it's first 3 years in Phoenix, but I bought it in Salt Lake City. When I bought it, it had 10 capacity bars. Less than a week of high temperature weather later I lost another bar, leaving me with 9. I purchased leafspy and an OBDII dealie on July 8th and got my first real data on the battery.

7/8/2016
Miles 36291.8
AHr 45.715
Hx 54.8
SOH 69%
QC 15
L1/L2 1595

I finally lost the 9th capacity bar on 5/16/17.

5/16/17
Miles 50033
Ahr 43.321
Hx 49.12
SOH 66%
QC 119
L1/L2 2120

Interestingly, the lowest AHr reading was several days earlier on 5/13/17 at 43.098.

I visited the dealer on 5/17/17 and they kept my leaf all day before saying that Nissan had approved the warranty replacement and my battery was ordered. They told me to expect a call the following week. They surprised my though and called me the very next day to say that my battery had arrived. My battery was replaced on 5/22 and it's like a brand new car. I went from 55 mile range to 90+. I'm definitely going to baby this new battery.

After replacement:
5/23/17
Ahr 65.4
Hx 99.95
SOH 100%

Yay! Out of curiosity, what was the build month on the car? It's on the driver's side door sticker.
