This is a little OT, but I just looked at some TED data from last night's charging, and it sheds some light on both charging and preheating the car. See my blog at:

Would other Leaf owners please post to this thread with your range experiences? I think this would be a valuable thread for people that may be considering the purchase of a Leaf.

Estimated range was 12 miles when I stopped, for what that's worth. I could have gone 90, but it would have been very tight. Lower speed would help; I only dropped below 55 mph once during the trip.

Malcolm, I'm here for you, buddy! OAT around 25 degrees F this morning. I turned the heat up to max (89 degrees) and fan to max. Auto temp control off, because I don't like seeing the A/C light come on. Before I began, the climate control was drawing its usual 1.5 kw. Fan on low, temp set to about 64. As soon as I maxed temp and fan control, I saw 3 kw, then 4, 4.5, and maybe even 5 kw. At that point, the heater was consuming almost as much power as the traction motor, so I turned everything back down to normal. Residual heat kept things toasty for a few minutes after that. There is a minute or more of lag before you feel any change, up or down in temp.

Amazing news kolmstead.

I asked this because I intend to do 90 miles in a road with limit speed of 56 miles (90 kmh) but among the road I have to reduce speed several times to 44 miles (70 kmh). With your post I trust I'll be able to reach my goal :). One more question kolmstead. How was the topography of the road you did, flat, some hills?

Thanks

ruimegas, see this blog: blog.php?u=631&start=5

Two significant hills. One near the beginning, one near the end of the trip. They hurt range quite a bit!

I started a range page on the wiki. I'd love some "real user data" worked into the text.

i have "commentary" about range anxiety and how it really does not apply to me as an EV owner but actually applies to all drivers period.

but i have done two specific tests one at 70 mph, limited climate controls and guessed a range of around 79 miles based on a 63 (42 miles FW) mile RT that left. us 16 miles of range left.

and another at 63 mph with extensive climate control trip was 66.4 miles (with side trip) and had a range of "about" 5 miles or so. morning temps were in the mid 20's, afternoon low 40's.

My commute is 17.6 miles one way, so I've been charging to 80%. With a few miles of running around at work, I usually end up driving 40 to 45 miles, and I use 50% of the battery. Get home with anywhere from 17% to 30% SOC. I drive 55 mph most of the way, usually in ECO. Light traffic. Recharging to 80% gives me 67 to 70 miles Estimated Range in the morning.

Except this week. Same routine, but Tuesday morning, my car only showed 59 miles ER. Wednesday, 57. This morning, 53. Again, that's on 80% charge.

What's changed? I think it's the headwind on the way home. We've had 25-30 mph winds out of the west each night this week while I'm driving home. Car bounces around more, and there has been considerably more wind noise around the side windows. It takes more power to maintain my normal speed, and the car adjusts my ER the next morning accordingly.

In the morning, my ER goes up dramatically as soon as I hit the road; in three or four miles, it's back up to 70 miles. No headwind, maybe even a strong tailwind.
