I didn't need to move the wheels. Holding the axle firmly in while greasing, I could see from the bottom and top where I was greasing without getting grease on anything else.

Since it's standard practice by many car manufactures to stake to absolutely guarantee that it's not going to move, why would you think anything else is better? Are you trying to save a $5 nut for next time?
