40 kw-hr battery in 2016 leaf

Dealer just replaced my battery in 2016 Leaf SE. Range said 168 miles when I got in. Drove 10 miles and now it says 155. Are they putting 40 kw-hr batteries in now as replacements?

Car has 71k miles, battery was down to 61% SOH.

I think that you'll find the range estimate getting back to where your car was when new, in a few days, or two weeks at most.

How many amp-hours (in the screen that shows SOH and Hx) does Leaf Spy show? How many gids on a full charge?

At 92%, it was 262 amp-hr. SOC is 150%.

I'm afraid it will be at 40% battery and die on me.

If the car is behaving normally now, it isn't likely to die. That would be great, if they had switched to 40kwh packs as replacements...

262 amp-hours sounds wrong. My 11 bar 24 kWh car is 52.99 AHr. Can you put up a screenshot of that screen? You can upload it to https://imgur.com/ and obscure your VIN, if you wish.

That would be amazing. It means they are out of the smaller batteries and its just cheaper to move to 40s.

If true, this would be news worthy, and oddly hugely positive for Nissan's brand. Please provide screen shots.

Those pictures look really promising! We've heard from a couple forum members who were able to upgrade older Leafs to 40kWh packs themselves, so it's definitely possible. For Nissan to be quietly upgrading the packs is HUGE, but also a little strange. I mean, why wouldn't they be advertising this loudly? It almost seems like your dealer messed up the replacement and put in the larger pack by mistake.

Incase this is a true 40kWh battery, let's hope they put the correct conversion software, otherwise charging it is going to be interesting to say the least.

If I were OP I would call them and ask more about it.

That can't be correct. The first image implies 100+ KWH ( 262ah*393v=102.966 KWH). Drive the car for a couple of days and see how far you can get on a charge. The second image seems more reasonable and does imply a 40KWH battery. I think the BMS is confused. Drive the car for a couple of weeks and see if the BMS spits out more reasonable numbers. In any case, the actual range you get from driving down the battery will tell the truth.

CaliLeaf: What are all the part nos of parts used for your battery pack replacement? That should be very revealing. For example, a 40kWh pack even requires a different set of covers than the 24kWh pack, I think. They should have provided this information on your invoice.

There are some reddit threads lighting up now saying that Nissan is going to swap to 40 batteries for warranty 30 replacements.

They may have been waiting for virtually all of the 24kwh packs' warranties to expire - although a 2016 24kwh pack would still qualify, along with those with late in-service dates...

Initially I assumed the OP had a 24kWh pack from the post details, but I was probably wrong.
When Calileaf wrote s/he had an SE s/he probably meant not an S but either an SV or SL, both of which had 30kWh battery packs (the S had a 24kWh pack). These battery packs have 8 yr/100,000 mile warranties which would explain why the dealer would replace them (under warranty) at 71,000 miles and might explain why less information about the replacement was given to the owner.

As I understand it, the covers are specific to battery generation, not to capacity. That is, all batteries made in 2011/2012 have different covers from those in 2013+, but the covers remained the same until the Leaf+ (62 kwh packs).

Is there someone with more expertise that can confirm?
