As reported about an hour ago:

I wonder what GM will use in the Spark now... It's unlikely that Fisher will be around long enough for it to make much of a difference there...

Johnson Controls is aiming to buy A123. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/business/174380331.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

JCI is one of the other leading lithium battery suppliers - I imagine it will be business-as-usual for customers once the dust settles.
See Stoaty's post earlier: http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=236407#p236407" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

LG is number 1 in the market, JCI buying A123 will bolster their position and should mean that all the good stuff from A123 stays alive.

Bet with the Govt. bailout Chevrolet was being pressured to use A123 with with Volt, but were privy to things that had them go elsewhere...

I'm skeptical of the Spark EV, hope I'm wrong.

The demise of A123 was predicted a while back by Vinod Khosla of Khosla Ventures - June 2011:

"Khosla spoke to about 300 energy storage experts at the annual Energy Storage
Association (ESA) meeting. He acknowledged the critical importance of energy storage,
showed his knowledge of the sector, and had the crowd eating out of his hand. He then
proceeded to dismiss many of the technologies that those at the industry gathering were
working on as "toys" because of their inability to scale to truly solve grid-level problems. He
also predicted that A123, the lithium-ion battery manufacturer would not be around in ten
years."

Very sad that US Li-ion battery manufacturers are disappearing. Add A123 to the list of companies vanishing - Enerdel, Valence, international Battery, Boston Power, etc. Who's next?

Yep, A123 has been struggling for quite some time now. They have been teetering on the edge of bankruptcy for quite a while.

While it's sad, it can also be looked at as inevitable.

As a market matures, you will see consolidation in the industry - making Lithium batteries takes a lot of resources to bring them in at the lowest price. In the end we will probably have a 2-3 primary manufacturers with perhaps a dozen niche manufacturers.

The solar industry is going through a similar process right now - all the companies are struggling and there will be a lot of debris left behind as the strongest companies survive.

Some will try to compare the demise of A123 to Solyndra - but I think they are markedly different. Solyndra absolutely struggled to find a buyer for their assets and IP at a decent price - it's quite likely we will never see a Solyndra product again. In comparison, we immediately have an established company ready to come in and buy A123 and it's inevitable that we will see A123 tech continue in the marketplace - hopefully JCI can get the production cost of A123 tech down, as it's products have always been very well regarded, but it's price has always turned customers away.

Whew. That bodes well for my stock then... :lol:
I was just thinking the same thing. Bummer
Actually, I was being serious. If Johnson Controls is serious about buying them out, the stock might be converted - which could be good. Or it might be a forced sell... Which would suck.

David Herron has a good article on the bankruptcy here: http://www.torquenews.com/1075/a123-systems-veers-wanxiang-johnson-controls-and-bankruptcy" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

It ends with Plug In America's quote from Jay Friedland: "Government can help facilitate innovation, but the natural business cycle remains - some failures in any emerging industry are inevitable," says Jay Friedland, Plug In America's legislative director. "Yet, our country is experiencing tremendous success as we electrify transportation. A raft of companies - Johnson Controls, Envia, Saft, GM, and LG Chem among them - are making great strides in driving down battery costs while creating a U.S.-based manufacturing sector for battery technology. This drives down the cost of plug-in vehicles while creating jobs and keeping at home the $1-billion per day we're currently sending overseas for oil, creating a better, safer America."

...Chapter 11 bankruptcy accompanied by a sale of technology and assets to Johnson Controls.
Oh, an asset sale? The technology may live on, but it sounds like A123 is finished. Bummer. Well, I'm gonna hold on to my stock anyway on the off chance something good happens...
