New head unit but no climate control

Hi all,
I have just purchased my first Nissan Leaf which is a 30kwh x model 2016.
This is an Japanese import into NZ and instead of converting the head until to English they hav put in a new head unit which is a pioneer with apple play etc so by all accounts a good stereo.
My issue is (something I wasn’t aware of at time of purchase) I can’t see what’s going on with the climate control plus I can’t put it on a charge timer. I have also noticed from some images of the original that there is an information section in the original head unit.
My question is how much does this matter?
As I have never had the original I don’t know what is missing or what effect that will have on the car given. Are there any other car features which rely on the head unit?
Any feedback would be appreciated.

I'm not overly familiar with how the climate information is displayed on the '16 but on the '18 SL that I have with the OEM radio, only the temperature is shown on the screen during times that it gets adjusted (and even then I don't agree with the temp that is displayed versus what it actually is, but nevertheless). WIthout using an aftermarket interface that is designed to do what you need, there's probably not an option for it. Companies like Metra, iDatalink, PAC and a few others over here in the US are responsible for accessing the OEM information and making it available on the aftermarket radio. Considering you are in NZ and bought a JDM car, you might not ever get what you need without finding an OEM radio and seeing if that would work.

The following addresses just the climate control concerns:

As a workaround for temperature,you can press the down button enough times that it has bottomed out, then count the number of presses on the upside to determine what temperature has been selected. This is only in effect when the a/c or heater has actually been selected (there is no temperature selection in effect if both are off).
The mode would be my biggest concern in such a situation, as it continually loops a sequence of the combination of outlet ducts. You can set the fan up a little and press the mode button until you feel air from a face-level vent. From that, you can count presses to determine which mode you ultimately select.
