Hello all.
My 2019 Japanese import ZE1 e+G has been a revelation since it arrived a couple of months ago, but I'm still trying to get my head around few features.
One thing that's bugging me is that the compass/direction finder in the main dash is waaaaaay off.
I wondered whether it had something to do with the car moving from the northern hemisphere to down south here in Melbourne, Australia, but I suspect is that was the case it would be off by 180 degrees. However it's weirder than that - when I'm driving north it says I'm going south-east!
Does anyone know if it's possible to re-calibrate the compass?
Most of the time it's not important because I'm driving on familiar city/suburban streets, but when I go bush it would be very helpful to know which direction I'm facing.

Ditto for me - my compass seems to be approximately the opposite of what its bearing should be... Though, given how quiet these forums are, I'm not expecting a solution anytime soon.

I've done a little bit of research, and the closest I have come to a solution is identifying the problem - it appears that the "zone" of the compass has not been changed to the correct region... Theoretically, if one sets the correct "zone", the compass should auto-calibrate (though there are ways to calibrate the compass manually, too).

Sadly, I can only find instructions on how to change the compass "zone" for Nissan vehicles where the compass is built-in to the mirror; I have not yet found instructions on how to change the compass "zone" for Nissan vehicles which has the compass in the dash-computer (though presumably, there's no reason why these also should not be able to change their compass "zone").

Here is a map of the compass "zones" for another Nissan vehicle (a Navara), and it would be relatively safe to assume that it is the same for the Leaf:

Thanks for that info - it's certainly more than I've been able to find out elsewhere.
I think my best best might be to ask my e-mechanic. He's got lots of experience with Leafs, so I reckon if anyone knows he will.
I'll let you know if there's any success.

Japan appears to be in zone 10 which is curled around that anomaly at zone 12. Magnetic North would be sensed with about a 45° NE offset, requiring a CCW rotation to indicate the North Pole.

Australia is shown to be covered by zones 5-8 which are primarily aligned with a longitudinal N-S magnetic field and a very strong magnetic South, which would likely require a 180° rotation to point to North depending upon the sensor (magnetic hall effect sensor?). There is a strong vertical component to the magnetic field which may also be sensed and used in the calculation.

So i can see how a zone 10 car if moved to zone 5 in Southern Hemi, makes the 45 CCW correction and will show a car pointing North as heading SE.

This is likely a setting that can be adjusted with the Consult tool or some clone SAE J2534 device that can do pass thru programming.

Oof, I found some stuff on these very forums about this software / connectivity package, and it ain't cheap!

Odd that - for the Leaf - there doesn't appear to be a way to do this at a user level (it looks like Nissan vehicles with the mirror-GPS can perform a certain button combination that will give drivers the ability to change the compass "zone")...

Odd yes, but also part of the joy of an import...from Nissan's perspective the answer is probably "works as designed in the market it was intended for" :-(

Then there's the warranty those of us with imports don't have.... if my battery goes dud, it's new car time!

gregory,
A low cost programmer can be made using your pc or laptop running an arduino sketch over USB to an arduino with CAN chips. This gets connected to the OBDII port CAN buss lines and lets you send and receive J2534 commands and data (e.g. 02 21 xx). Somebody with a consult tool will figure out what codes to use to change the zone.
