2013-2014 bar losers and capacity losses

"- I always charged to 100% and very rarely quick charged (20 times total until this fall when I needed to start driving my daughter to high school)

I'm guessing the crap chemistry combined with the charging to 100% is why it's got so much loss as he's in a mild climate.

I had put this in a another thread, but this past week a 2013 owner pulled up next to me at the charger. 50K miles 12 bars and 86% SoH.

Not too many 12 bar 2013s left out there. He said he was religious about keeping the car between 20 and 80% SoC.

Hi, this is probably covered elsewhere but I've been unable to find it. My October 2013 Leaf is now at 9 bars, which is fine as it's basically a shopping trolley, but as it's approximately 75% capacity, when I charge to 80%, is it 80% of the original 100% or 80% of the now 75%.? It shows a range of 90km when charged to 80%, and another 15km if I occasionally charge to 100% (eco mode). As the battery is now degraded, would charging it to 100% frequently do any extra harm, or should I keep charging to 80% for the foreseeable future to preserve it as much as possible? Thanks.

Good question! As best we can figure out (meaning: guess) a degraded battery should still be charged to 80% of whatever capacity it currently has left. Does it make a big difference? Probably not, for post-Canary packs, unless the weather or the battery is Hot. In those two cases I'd try to do 80 or 90% of remaining capacity, while if the battery is cool you should be fine charging to 100% as long as you don't let it sit for many days that way.

My take is that, if you need the range, then charge to %100 but don't leave it at a high state of charge for long. If you don't need the range, enable 80% mode.

FWIW, I have my charge timer enabled for 80% mode but I have 80% mode disabled for override charging.

That way, when I plugin for overnight charging, I always get an 80% charge. Do adhoc charging via the override button, I can get a 100% charge.

I did that too, with my 2013. You set the timer for 80%, but then disable the 80% limit in the global settings for the car. That way when the timer is overridden the car can charge to 100%. It's called, IIRC, "Long Life Mode" in the global settings, and you disable it. If you then set the charge timer to start and stop at the exact same time every day, with the 80% limit enabled for the timer, you can charge to 80% without having to keep setting the timer, and charge to 100% just by pressing the Timer override.

To answer your remaining unanswered question. It's 80% of the remaining 75% capacity, which would be ~60% (the calculation is: 0.8 x 0.75 = 0.6) of its original capacity.

Recently lost 4th Bar. See my signature. Located where its hot as heck! But I almost never charge when above 90 degrees and almost always charge at 3am. Only charge to 100% when I need to for a specific trip. I hope to upgrade to a new or newer Leaf, or find a 40kwh pack for an upgrade. Not sure yet which way to go.
